Battered Women or Homeless Pets?
 

I would like to get your opinions on this...

I am considering adding a statement on one of my stores with something to the effect of "X% of proceeds are donated to charity"... And yes.. I would actually donate the money if I advertised it.

2 Questions:
1. I'm considering either homeless pet shelters or battered women's shelters. Would people get the wrong idea if I chose battered women's shelters? (I'm not suggesting that women in porn are battered or anything.. Just that might be the perception of the general public).

2. Most charities would gladly accept the donation, but do you think they'd object to being publicly associated with a porn company?

3. If you were to donate money from your sales, which would you choose?

You will also lose a % of customers that don't want to be funding a donation to whatever charity you have selected.

You're talking about people in this thread, right, since the choice was mentioned? If the sales page said "5% of proceeds are donated to help lost and abused pets" I can't imagine people saying "why not the Red Cross?" I haven't heard people bitch about Bob Barker or anyone else helping charitable causes. That is, as long as the page doesn't say "we donate to lost pets, not abused women", I don't think it would cross the reader's mind.

As far as having their name on a porn site, some charities certainly wouldn't like that. I was on the board of a non-profit that wouldn't have wanted that. You could instead just say "donated to help lost and abused pets" or "donated to charities for abused women" rather than naming names.

There is an organization whose sole purpose is to consider which charitable organizations have the most need and ensure that donations aren't wasted, then divy up donations. That's the United Way. They make sure that money goes where it's most needed and such.

Having said all of that, follow your heart. Heck maybe go visit the organizations, volunteer does a few hours, and see where your heart is.

You could try doing as some grocery stores do and have a optional charitable "upsell". The form could have a checkbox "would you like to add a $2 donation to help lost and abused pets?"

I love animals, but I'd rather help people first.

I'd choose pets. women have too much attention in the medias right now. Men are treated like shit nowadays in Canada(Quebec)

I personally only donate to animal charities...

make it a customer choice...they should have the option to pick whether they want their 5% to go to animals, women or whatever other charity you can think of...a choice of 3-4 charities should suffice...you should not care whether or not the charity wants to be associated with you, if they don't simply find another...also post proof of deposit...people will trust you more if you regularly update your "donations" page with some scans and what not.....
