N Korea threatens to reduce Seoul 'to ashes'

North Korea's military has warned of imminent "special actions" that will reduce South Korea's conservative government to ashes within minutes, sharply escalating the rhetoric against its southern rival.

The threat from the North's military leadership comes amid concerns that North Korea may be plotting another provocation in the wake of an unsuccessful rocket launch condemned by the UN Security Council as a violation of a ban against missile activity.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned North Korea against "further provocative measures", telling reporters in New York late on Monday that such actions "will not be desirable for the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula".

North Korea characterised the April 13 rocket launch as a failed bid to send a satellite into space - not a disguised test of missile technology - but then followed up two days later by unveiling a new long-range missile at a military birthday parade for late President Kim Il Sung.

There are new concerns that North Korea may conduct a nuclear test as it did after rocket launches in 2006 and 2009. South Korean intelligence officials say recent satellite images show the North has been digging a new tunnel in what could be preparation for a third atomic test.

"Nuclear weapons are not the monopoly of the United States," Lieutenant Colonel Nam Dong Ho told The Associated Press on Monday on the North Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone, saying North Korea needs atomic weapons to defend itself against the threat of attack from the US.

"It's my personal opinion, but I think we'll continue to conduct nuclear tests."

On Monday, the military warned in a statement carried by state media that it would launch "special actions" soon against the South Korean government and conservative media.

However, there was no outward sign of tension on the North Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone. At Panmunjom, small groups of tourists were touring the "peace" village and the buildings where the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953. The South Korean side was quiet.

For days, North Korea has railed against South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and conservative South Korean media for criticising its rocket launch and the celebrations of the centennial of Kim Il Sung's birth.

But Monday's message, distributed by the state-run Korean Central News Agency and attributed to the "special operation action group" of the Korean People's Army's Supreme Command, was unusual in its specifics.

"Once the above-said special actions kick-off, they will reduce all the rat-like groups and the bases for provocations to ashes in three or four minutes, in much shorter time, by unprecedented peculiar means and methods of our own style," it said.

The threat comes as North Korea's new commander in chief, Kim Jong Un, makes a strong show of support for the "military first" policy championed by his father, late leader Kim Jong Il. North Korea marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of its army on Wednesday.

Seoul expressed worry that the threats were hurting relations between the countries and increasing animosity.

"We urge North Korea to immediately stop this practice," Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk told reporters, according to the ministry. "We express deep concern that the North's threats and accusations have worsened inter-Korean ties and heightened tensions."

Also known as a typical Monday on the Korean peninsula.

What is wrong with north Korea are they just saying this to get more aid

bean-aid 04-23-2012 10:25 PM

the problem is they don't have penicellin, they keep adding rhetoric to the mix while the leaders all have syphilis. It's a problem with health care... same thing happened with Al Capone... you get crazy and you just go crazy

You're forgetting China's likeness for N Korea. It just won't happen in this time period, period. It's all mumbo-jumbo to stir the pot to try and "solidify" their need for atomic technology by creating unrest. Once they have full-scale weapons they will sit on them and use them to continually cause unrest by methods of threat knowing full well that China will not allow anything bad to happen and protect all sensitive parties involved (for their own gain of course). China will calm united nations by the similar show of forces (ever watch video of a Chinese drill?). Everyone will back off and time will pass again until unrest is caused again and again, then resolved the same way again and again.

Nobody could afford a major Asian war right now.. even the Asian superpowers that be. Free movement of world resources is too important to their well-being right now. It just won't happen over current events. Now.. wait until oil reserves run drastically low on a global scale when we take our transition from fossil to renewable and third world countries who still rely on them go bat-shit-insane. Then you might see a few nukes fly about.

This is really part of North Korea's solution to their hunger problem - and solves their lack of ability of feeding it's own population. But pressing that big red button and destroying South Korea, they'll kill their own population.

I live in Seoul and very few take NK's threats seriously but at the same time many feel safer because of the US military presence on the peninsula.

Yeah NK knows that if they ever launch an actual assault on SK they'll be in deep shit. Like many have already stated... unless Kim Jong Un is a complete moron he'll just keep doing what his dad did. Rhetoric, empty threats, occasional pokes at South Korea's military.

They say shit like that on a weekly basis.

There is a site that you can read NK official new releases - Its actually hilarious - Well it would be hilarious if they didn't have nukes....

If this was in Florida, South Korea could stand their ground and shoot North Korea first.

North Korea seems to be forcing South Korea. They are really such rivals. Of course, peace and stability is the ideal. After reading the article, it seems to me that different countries are having a hard time teaming up to explore outer space.
