Even though the restaurant policy of adding 17% is clearly stated on the menu, that does not mean it is legal to require/demand a gratuity to be paid. :2 cents:

Spunky 05-02-2012 09:54 PM

Shitty service = no tip. unless they were taking advantage and cheaping out.More hassle than it's worth

Sure it is. Its called large party service fee. Ever ordered room service before? Did you see gratuity on it and then another "optional".
Tamisha don't tip.

I agree. Or less tip anyway.

I hate it when they set the tip.

I'm with the customer.

Crap service means no tip, why the fuck should you?!!

I cant believe that the restaurant thinks that charging an extra 17% for parties of 5 or more makes sense.

A 17% discount I could understand.

nico-t 05-03-2012 03:37 AM

weird tipping culture you guys have. Putting a tip on the bill completely misses the point of a tip. Tips are not mandatory. I give 2 euros tip tops at a restaurant to round off, when anything sucks i give nothing.

MaDalton 05-03-2012 03:38 AM

no Resevoir Dog references yet?

exactly, 17% extra for giving them more business than usual? It should be the other way around! Fucking crazy.

u-Bob 05-03-2012 03:39 AM

I don't get the whole "thinking you're entitled to getting tipped"-mentality.

That being said. their restaurant, their rules. It doesn't matter how stupid the rules are. If you walk into a restaurant and it's clearly stated that eating there will cost you $XXXX and a blowjob, that's the way it is. Don't like the deal they're offering, walk away. No one's forcing you to eat there.

I agree, but don't call it a tip or a gratuity - Call it what it is, a surcharge.

i usually give 10% which makes me here in CZ look like a crazy rich person :1orglaugh

when a Czech person gets a restaurant bill of 743 czech crowns, he MAYBE gives 750 - and 7 crowns are 28 euro cents

Mr Pheer 05-03-2012 03:48 AM

Not paying a tip is a civil matter. Holding someone against their will is a criminal matter. I wonder why there is no mention of that in the article.

Thats what I was thinking - Its false imprisonment.

My table would have gone through the window.

yep it's called kidnapping once they locked the door. and they called the cops to document it for a future court case! :1orglaugh the tip will seem very small when their paying a lawyer to fight from going to prison. :2 cents:

That would be cents not 'whole' euros....

I think thats what he is saying.

CamTraffic 05-03-2012 04:33 AM

Lot of people don't realize that Tips is the only source of revenues for the wait Staff.
"17% added for Tip for party of 5 or more" was clearly added-printed on the menu.

Bitch was causing trouble, typical! I would banned that customer if i Owned the joint, fuck her, she probably had really Good service on top of it

bns666 05-03-2012 04:37 AM

i am even a negative tipper, i give less!

yes.

in that given example i would probably have paid 800 czk - not even 10% but still WAY more than what czech people give

800 czk = 32 Euro = 2,28 Euro tip

lucas131 05-03-2012 05:05 AM

guantanamo for everyone!

brentbacardi 05-03-2012 05:33 AM

You don't have to pay included gratuity, it is supposed to be included for your convenience. If you ask them to remove it they do. I have done it before. Also, they should have just left cash on the table for the exact amount minus gratuity and left.

If they held me against my will I would have started beating on whoever got in my way on the way to the door. I am trained in martial arts, I would have skillfully knocked a few on their asses and left.

arock10 05-03-2012 05:42 AM

Clearly no one here has worked in the restaurant biz which is surprising. Federal min wage for wait staff is $2.13 an hour. Tipping is not optional, if you think that you are a douchebag asshole. I tip 20% for service and maybe 15% for lousy service, which is rare. And for the Europeans, your service sucks, tip more

No, it's added for THEIR convenience. They put it there so by default you pay them extra.
Many people either forget it, don't look at the bill properly and many are a bit scared to ask for it to be taken off the bill so they don't.

Basically, it's no different from a pre-checked cross-sale.

brentbacardi 05-03-2012 05:51 AM

I have worked as host and waiter (worst job of my life!)

I usually tip aprox 20% but if they fuck my shit up really bad then they get nothing.

Example, I ask for food a certain way, they bring the wrong thing. Ok, mistakes happen and it was probably the chef. So no problem there. So they go back and bring the wrong thing again, now then its the waiter/waitresses fault since they should double check that shit at that point. I would only give them like 5% at this point if everything else was good, otherwise nothing.

Or say they disappear halfway through the meal to the point I need to call another waiter over to ask for another drink or something. I do not want to sit there with an empty alcohol glass for 20 minutes. Depending on how bad it is would be how much i tip.

Or one place the waitress was talking to a friend, for like 15 minutes and I kept asking for a new waitress to come take our order and they were like, "its her table" so since she didnt bother to come serve us for 15 minutes I left no tip.

I think those are reasonable situations to cut back or give no tip. Like I said, I was a waiter and rudeness and not caring whatsoever about the people you are serving is not how you get tips, so that shouldn't surprise them.

Yea exactly the same as a prechecked cross sale, trying to charge you twice $39.95 for your $1 trial sandwich

I wouldn't have left without paying the tip - I would have just left.

In my opinion, that is the world upside down.

You are aware that Europe is not a country, right?

Over here, in the Netherlands tips are a bonus. If you give good service, you get more tips.
Minimum wage is higher and serving people get a basic salary, as it should be(in my opinion). Everything on top is extra. If the service is bad, the tip is not given or lowered to indicate you were not happy.

PR_Glen 05-03-2012 06:10 AM

when in Rome do as the Romans do..

and even here waiters make more than $2 per hour

nico-t 05-03-2012 06:12 AM

if you take a job for $2 an hour you need to get your head checked.

Unfortunately that's simply the reality over there.

I agree with MaDalton: when in Rome...etc.

So in the US, I do tip but not 15%-20%. Unless it's really good.

lucas131 05-03-2012 06:19 AM

i am in czech republic as madalton, and if the service is not really bad, i tip always 20+ percents. people are happy, and next time i will get better service :)

Nurgle 05-03-2012 06:22 AM

im happy to not tip if the service is non existant, a tip is earnt its not taken for granted

alextokyo 05-03-2012 06:28 AM

Wait, all this over a fucking tip?

Pretty sure that customers are not required to tip for service if the service was bad, since the restaurant didn't hold up their end of the contract. If the service was good though, they're just being nigggers.

Nigggers gonna nig.

Regardless, I never tip. Fuck that. Good luck detaining me while you phone the pigs. :thumbsup

Word, yo.

I once tipped 12% in Montreal and the lady came back to me saying: "Excuse me sir, over it's customary to tip 15%(or 17%, whatever it was)".

So not for a second did she think something wasn't right..so simply stated that I should tip more. Well, fuck you.

iSpyCams 05-03-2012 06:48 AM

I typed a long rant based on my experience, waiting tables changed my view of the world in a pretty negative way, I honestly believed we were all equal till I started waiting tables. After proofreading and filtering for racism this is what's left:

Tipping is a cultural thing and it only seems to work well for white middle class Americans.

If it wasn't for mandatory gratuities, waiters would refuse to serve large parties.

I always thought tips is optional

pornguy 05-03-2012 06:58 AM

We went to hooters yesterday. 3 people and the bill was 598 pesos so about 50$.. we gave the girl 700 pesos and she almost shit her tight orange pants.. Most people dont tip that well here either.
