Anyone Familiar with Spain ?

Our daughter is going there, need info on wifi availablity, and a good method of talk / text to the US, prepaid phone or something ? Any info appreciated.

Wifi is readily available in hostels and hotels.

If Skype is an option it is a good option. Depending on how long she is going for I would call your local Cell phone provider and see what options they have for roaming and text overseas. I would try to use the phone as little as possible since a $2K bill is easy to rack up in as little time as one week.

Someone said there are many open wifi spots.
And yes, Skype for talking/texting :pimp

Tons of wifi spots everywhere and we use our own UK mobiles there most of the time without any problems. Spanish "pay as you go" phones readily available everywhere but phoning out of Spain to other countries with them is expensive.

sperbonzo 05-03-2012 12:53 PM

All she will need is skype...

....and of course:

They say Spain is pretty
though I've never been.
Daniel says it's the best place
his eyes have ever seen
oh and
he should know he's been there enough.

I say we ask Elton John's ex boyfriend Daniel. :D

Depends in which cities she's going.. I moved to Spain few months ago and I'm not really satisfied with the internet services here..

In big cities like Barcelona, there are public wifi spots, but not everywhere.. Some of them are with limited sessions etc.. But if she visits coffee bar or some restaurant, most probably they got wifi.

One little secret that might be fun is teaching her how to crack WEP passwords.
Someone out there may be angry on me, but I don't know if people or ISP's are stupid, they all use wifi routers with WEP encryption. They are sold from the ISP's with some default settings with large password on the bottom, and most of the people are just reading it once, writing it on their PC and living like that, without changing the security type or password.

You can set her up "aircrack" and write her few commands. I assure you that she'll be able to crack a wifi network in around 5 minutes, wherever she goes.

Ecchi22 05-03-2012 07:23 PM

I know it might be illegal, but I'm cracking those wherever I go and need internet. I keep telling people about this, but they don't seem to care much (oh I'm sure they will, when problems are going to start arising with new internet limitations).

Here's the link that will help you http://lifehacker.com/5305094/how-to...with-backtrack

I'm thinking of getting an android application for cracking WEP. More mobility and "personal" spots around the country :P

I use it for calls only, they are especially good for international calls which suites me - Not sure how well it works for Internet.

wifi's pretty good, can be slow though. I live near a small town of only 40k and they've got townwide wifi for free.

If she's going to the bigger cities, just use hotel wifi's most have them.

pornguy 05-04-2012 05:35 AM

Our hotel had a fair connection in the lobby. But nothing in the rooms. So that should be enough. not like she will need to talk with you 12 times a day.

The spanish dykes are relentless ...

sperbonzo 05-04-2012 08:16 AM

They will hand her these two items when she gets off the plane:

and:

Salted ham and cigarettes are mandatory in Spain. I don't make the rules.
