So my house got FLOODED

Yesterday morning at 3:15am, we got woken by the police hammering on our front door.

I ran downstairs and when i opened the door i noticed a shitload of water in our street, and almost up our garden path. He told me to get my clothes and get whoever else was in the house and get out. A water pipe has burst further down the road, and because of the dip in our street, we were right in it's path. At that point they had no idea how or when it would stop, and it was rising fast.

By the time my girlfriend and i got back downstairs, the water was already in our front door. We quickly grabbed some shit that was on the floor (laptop etc) and went to go out the back as instructed. When we got to the kitchen we saw that the water had actually come around that side of the house to and the floor was already flooded. We got outside and saw the size of the area affected.

Over 20 houses were affected all in. And many cars were ruined aswell, since the water was actually up to the roof of some of them.

After the water was finally gone we got back to the house to check the damage done. The complete bottom floor of the house had been wiped out. And now we have been informed we have to move out for at least 2 months, untill they get their shit back together and try to restore to house to it's previous state.

Now the battle with the insurance companies begins. We are looking for more compensation that just our valubles that were ruined being replaced. The stress and inconvenience it is causing now is a major factor. The water company has accepted full responsibility for what happened.

I just wonder if a good lawyer would have a big success and sue the fuckers and PROPERLY compensate us for this whole situation.

Anyone here ever been in a similar situation ?? :Oh crap

shake 05-23-2012 11:37 AM

Crappy man, it's amazing the damage that water can cause. That must be one HUGE water pipe.

I've had a flood caused by a storm before, and the insurance covered it fine.. hope it works out for you.

Sly 05-23-2012 11:38 AM

Lawsuits only happen in America.

Tom_PM 05-23-2012 11:38 AM

Man, I wish I could advise you. Sorry for your trouble and losses.
Good luck on a quick resolution!

MrBottomTooth 05-23-2012 11:41 AM

That would suck. I had about 17K worth of damage done by a lightning strike once. At least that was all just electronics and the insurance company was fairly good about replacing everything. (although I found out I had a 5K limit on computers which I never realized)

I can't imagine having my house filled with water. Won't they basically have to gut it and start from scratch since that water will be in the insulation and drywall, etc. The last thing you want after that is all done is mold problems.

You should be getting reimbursed for renting a different place until you can move back in as well, right?:(

Theo 05-23-2012 11:43 AM

Scott, I'm sorry to hear that. Did you appraise the size of the damages?

Yup you are spot on. It's because of the water getting into the insulation etc, we are having to move out.

The full kitchen has to come out aswell, so they can get into the walls there aswell. It really is like starting all over again.

Just what we need right now... :Oh crap:Oh crap

Edit: Yes they will have to pay up for wherever we are moving to for the next 2 months...

Choopa Phil 05-23-2012 11:47 AM

Sorry to hear about that I hope it all gets rectified asap!

They are sending someone out on Friday. We have our list ready and what we believe everything is worth.

I just want to see if they give us any bullshit when dealing with it all. They shouldn't to be honest, because our insurance company will be claiming it all back to the water company anyway...

brassmonkey 05-23-2012 11:51 AM

damn that's fucked up i like my baths in the evening not in the morning :helpme was the water at least warm? :Oh crap

ottopottomouse 05-23-2012 11:55 AM

2 months is a short estimate for going back although if it was a water main at least it will have been clean water rather than the filth that usually comes with a flood.

It was an accident and they are going to have to fix up the houses probably better than they were plus rehouse you in the mean time. Claiming for distress and a lifelong fear of having a bath on top of that is being a bit greedy although i'm sure you'll find a no-win-no-fee outfit willing to take it on in exchange for 80% of any compensation.

suesheboy 05-23-2012 11:55 AM

Rent other place now and be willing to sign a lease.

Accept nothing less after a flood restoration than removing everything down to the bare stone, concrete and steel. Anything porous such as plaster, sheet rock, carpeting, drapes needs to go as well as all flooring.

Treated wood in walls that has been sanitized and treated for mold can stay, but it is best to replace it too.

You will thank me latter.

Shotsie 05-23-2012 11:56 AM

Those sewer pipes were probably laid back when Henry VIII was still king.

I thought that aswell but it turns out it wasn't quite the case.

Even the news report said it was muddy/sewage filled water. Clearly the smell in the house backed this up... :(

Catalyst 05-23-2012 12:01 PM

I think I will update my go bag

Roald 05-23-2012 12:04 PM

Sorry to hear man.

I was a cat burglar in the Chicago area early 90's. I had a partner at the time, we worked as a team. He was from the east coast, but moved west after a few run-ins with Johnny Law in NY. We canvased a bunch of high class areas and found a neighborhood that was a real jackpot. My partner disguised himself as a police officer and snooped around these houses as folks prepared to leave town for the holidays. We spent a few day robbing, and flooding houses. that's the thing you see, each time we burgled, I would stuff rags in the drain and leave the faucets running. "All the great ones leave their mark" I would say. My partner would scoff at me, but I wanted to leave me calling card, so to speak. We flooded dozens of basements in the greater Chicago area. Eventually we were caught, linked to dozens of crimes and tossed in the slammer. I did 12 years, but got out on good behavior. Long story short, I have flooded lots of basements and homes.

Are you rich after selling the script rights for Home Alone to a Hollywood producer?

I got a raw deal, mainly because I hired a shady lawyer. That's why I work in webhosting now.

BTW... was reading your post thinking "wow, why would someone post this" ... and at the same time I was thinking "this all sounds vaguely familiar".

Good stuff!

wtf?

By the way, where does your bandwidth really come from? $60/mo with those specs screams shitty network... imho anyway. Sounds like the goold old days of FDC Servers ><

raymor 05-23-2012 01:19 PM

That really sucks. I would wait and see what the water company offers before running to a lawyer. I've had insurance companies and others treat me more than fairly at times, and not so fairly at other times. Any disputes would likely be worked out between your insurance company and theirs anyway.

His house is not even 2 years old yet, it's a fully new developed area! No excuses whatsoever for this other than sheer incompetence on the Water Company part.

Henry VIII was the King of England not Scotland, his reign was pre union (1509-1547).

Pisser about the flood, claim hard.
