submitting a proposal for a gTLD costs $185,000 (?147,480) and each successful domain would cost $250 000
.XXX was a fucking bargain in this respect...

Wizzo 06-12-2012 02:03 PM

What effect will it have on dot coms do you think?

Rochard 06-12-2012 02:05 PM

Interesting. Pretty soon it will cost too much to buy a domain name.

What do you think a .nyc domain name will go for?

TheSquealer 06-12-2012 02:05 PM

Good thing everyone was so worried about .xxx

BIGTYMER 06-12-2012 02:06 PM

com will still be #1.

I've always been a dot com is king supporter, but thinking this over the next 5years or so will fundamentally change the internet.

lucas131 06-12-2012 02:45 PM

and why do people need that? how many people will register .privacy? "yes, please contact me at my email, lucas131 at email dot privacy ... yes, privacy ... i know, but it was cheap ... hallo ... hallo ... ???" :upsidedow

keysync 06-12-2012 02:49 PM

Seems to me they want to categorize the internet by assigning all doctors to .doctor,
lawyers to .lawyer etc.
Already we have .gov that's pretty obvious.
It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
I'm betting on categorization though. :2 cents:

Would be interesting if Google buys something like .google and defaults their searches to it instead of .com...

Maybe for a while, but if there are 1000s of TLDs in a couple of years, of which many owned by big corporations such as google (so they have a big chance of actually being used .youtube .docs .facebook etc.) the new generation of internetters will be so used to all the different extensions they won't have any clue what .com is.
So .com will definitely use its value, maybe it will take 5 years, maybe 10, but in the end it will just be a random extension like all the other ones.

.com is king!

baddog 06-12-2012 05:46 PM

It is only a matter of time that this happens. There are only 26 letters in the alphabet.

This. Web pioneers are what made com king. Now folks will be spending a ton of money in branding others. A mail.google or vanityurl.fb could change everything.

.com value's will stay the same or increase, but any other tld will probably drop in value.

.fap would be a great one to get ....

.jerkoff ?? :winkwink:

Paul Markham 06-13-2012 03:29 AM

Just saw on the news. 2000 applications at $250,000 per application. sounds like a great money making scheme. Plus promotion will cost a lot.

Sell 25,000 @ $15 to cover the initial investment. Included more for the costs to apply, set up, etc.

RyuLion 06-13-2012 05:08 AM

Gratzzzzzzz!

tony286 06-13-2012 05:13 AM

I think if they did that in the beginning it could of worked. People now think .com and I dont think its going to change.
