Porn Studios Accused of Screwing Their Fans in BitTorrent Lawsuits

"A handful of pornography producers are being accused of racketeering, fraud, defamation and other charges in connection to their BitTorrent online litigation trolling strategies.

The program is simple: They sue IP addresses in court ? addresses detected to have allegedly and unlawfully downloaded copyrighted pornography without permission. Often, judges in these cases order internet service providers to cough up the identities of the account holders of the ISP ? and the shakedown begins, according to the Kentucky federal court suit (.pdf), which seeks class-action status."

I only support going after the uploaders, the owners of the pirate sites, possibly the hosts, and if you can the advertisers and processors. It's asking for trouble to go after every guy (or gal) with his dick in his hand who clicks a link. A good many of those people probably have no idea that what they are doing is illegal. It might work in theory but it's probably going to create one hell of a backlash.

Retirement is full of jigsaws and senility. He's had a lucky escape.

Yeah and I believe in going after stores that entice people with merchandise and
not the shoplifters.

A shoplifter knows full well that they are stealing though. Some guy clicking a link he finds in Google doesn't necessarily know that. A good majority might but not all of them. There's so many other better targets than the downloader that it makes little sense to go after them unless it's the last choice you have. Unless your motives are a money grab.

Well if you're torrenting, you are an uploader.

Nautilus 07-09-2012 05:06 PM

Torrent downloaders are also uploaders too, that's how bittorrent system works. Going after the uploader is one of the legit ways to protect your IP, and to make money from ligitation and settlements.

Calling torrent seeders "fans" is a joke. You may call WJ file hosts uploaders "fans" as well, while you're at it. Or you may claim Nathan is your "fan" when you find your stolen video at Pornhub. All of them distribute your IP illegaly for some gain, either monetary or not. Some "fans" indeed lol...

There's a difference between doing a money grab and extortion/blackmail.

Technically, yes. But we all know that in this game when we say uploader we mean someone that did a site rip, got the content and uploaded it to share it on purpose.

Not some n00b who clicked a link on google and is torrenting something without really knowing what they are doing.

Eitherway, as the article said, if they had any evidence or proof they would take them in for 150k PER INFRINGEMENT not try and blackmail them for a grand.

But they don't have evidence, they never go to court because they have no evidence and it is literally just slimy blackmail and extortion that hopefully will be stopped by your court system soon.
