My US Alexa rating is 290,087 Is that good or bad?

it doesn't matter, it's over-rated.

some sites with 100K daily have 300,000 alexa, while some sites with 5K daily have 150,000, really no sense factor.

That's not true. Our site isn't in the top 20k and it makes tons of money. KellyMadison.com isn't in the top 20k and it makes a ton of money as well.

Lol. That is a unique way of looking at it i guess..

That's because some sites are fed bullshit popup traffic that they bought...while other sites get REAL traffic. The alexa script counts time on the page and bounce rates too.

The "fake" traffic is what takes the ranking down because there is 0 time on the site and a 100% bounce rate too.

So all an all im seeing mixed feelings about the subject. The only reason it would matter to me is if that is what advertisers base the amount they are willing to pay you off of.

It can tell you if a site is basically dead or if it's one of the top sites on the internet;
but nothing in between that is reliable.

Sites that have webmaster traffic can rank high because a lot of webmasters use
the alexa toolbar. For that reason it appears that GFY's alexa ranking is grossly
inaccurate. Each post on the first page should have 3000 views if the alexa
rank was correct. :1orglaugh

It's not exact. Think of it like the Neilsen Ratings for television.
Not a true exact measure of traffic, but a good slice that is pretty damn close.

When I look at my google analytics numbers and then at alexa, they are pretty close.

Close enough to be able to judge a site's popularity for sure.

I don't know any webmaster that uses Alexa toolbar. Most people with any web experience stay away from all toolbars and anything else that would corrupt their internet experience.

Bull. Webmasters went nuts with the google toolbar and the page rank stuff.

I don't use alexa toolbar but webmasters who think it means something do use it.

I wouldn't be surprised if alexa and google are trading information from their tool

No, i dont use toolbars. They come with to much crap attatched to them.

Maybe some b.s. webmasters. But I do not know even ONE guy who is in this business that uses alexa toolbar.

I even make sure to sign out of my google account and turn off the personalized search before I use google search engine because I want to see it clean.

Every serious guy out there is the same way (including you). It's our business to know how things really look on the net. You know what I'm saying.

Having said that...I do have a theory how GFY has such a high ranking.

It's possible that it's due to the time on the site. I know that I usually keep GFY open on a tab all day long while I'm working. I come back and check stuff and read stuff in between tasks. And looking at the posting and lurking habits of others, I think a lot of people do.

blackmonsters, do you think that might be a reason for the ranking? Time on the site making it look like people are really spending all day on the site (because of the open tab) even though they are in and out in reality?

Im not sure if bounce rate has any effect on rankings or not. Up until today i never really had any interest in Alexa rankings. I mainly kept my eyes on Google PR.

I try to go off of the " content is king " rule. Give visitors what they want and keep fresh updates not only will they return but they are more likely to spread the word. A lot of successful business owners will tell you that word of mouth advertising is the best.

Ultimately it's the content on a tour that determines whether a membership is bought. Showing the surfer great content before he gets to a tour, helps a lot.

Alexa is full OF SHIT... there is no rhyme or reason to how they rank sites.. that fucking bar moves however it wants to..

I thought it didn't matter until I started selling hardlinks. Then I received a couple of "Alexa ranking is too low" emails so I guess it does matter to some of us.

It only matters to idiots.

PR and Alexa both are like trophies, some people care about them and to some it's just one more thing to dust around the house.
PR is mostly controlled through the number of backlinks to the site and Alexa is controlled by the amount of ALEXA TOOLBAR TRAFFIC.
I believe GFY has such a good Alexa rank for several reasons.
1. Many webmasters and traffic guys DO have the alexa toolbar installed. Also people who work in the ad industry, Juicyads for instance, rank and value the money to be made on a site by alexa. Not perfect but the best thing going at the moment.
2. Robbies right in GFY members spending a considerable amount of time on site, good for Alexa ranking. Also moving from one page to another a frequent amount of times all increases the score for our own GFY.
3. The sheer numbers of visitors coming to view the GFY site all help to contribute to our great alexa ranking and should help quiet down the assholes out there that keep posting threads stating the porn business is over and we're all headed for gloom and doom.

Lot of adult companies bought the Adult Alexa list (yes, they sell it) and are buying left and right if you are ranking on that list...

That being said, i don't agree with Sandman, Niched sites under 100k Alexa still bring in the $$

I guy on this board pretty much made a solid deal for me to list his content on
my front page and then changed his mind because of my alexa ranking.

I even told him that it would be conditional and taken down at his request if he
didn't think it was working out; but no, he stuck to the alexa rank.

The Hun has many, many times the amount of traffic GFY has. But it's mainly a single page that all the traffic is at. And then they leave to go see the links on the page. Maybe that's part of the reason he i-framed everything recently to get his Alexa ranking up where it should be by keeping people from leaving and getting Alexa to see it as more time on the site (which he is justified in doing)
