All this brouhaha over The Dark Knight Aurora killings
Some people are telling the movie studios, the worldwide promoters of the movie and people from the press to stop having red carpet events (which I thought was fine), but to extent not to even publish a review or have press about the movie. They tell them it may not be the appropriate time to publish this review in light of what happened in Colorado at a theater that was screening this movie. It's supposed to show some sensitivity and reverence to the victims of the shooting.
But my problem with it is how does not reviewing a movie equal sensitivity? The campaigns weren't suspended because of Batman; they were suspended because people died horribly in a mass shooting, which incidentally happened at a screening of TDKR. Claiming that critics should ignore TDKR as a result of that equates the film with the tragedy, which IMHO is both no favor to the movie and an insult to the victims.
We can honor the lives lost but still carry on. They canceled the Paris premiere: a wise decision, with it being such a huge event. But delaying the release of a review for a film the weekend it's released is ridiculous, with it being such an unnoticeable occurence. If you don't want to read the review because you are affected by what happened then don't read it, read it in a few days time instead.
We can't give the killer the attention he craves by bringing the film and journalism worlds to a hault (however temporary that hault may be). I am mindful of what happened and I am definitely not 'ignoring' what happened. What happened was tragic and horrific. But we can be mindful of what happened and still carry on.
