There's a drinking water additive for dogs with bad/poopy breath etc, that IIRC is only available from your vet.

Its called T/WA and is made by Glenhaven

You can get cheap alternatives online, not sure if they're any good though.

Cleaning up their crap also helps ;)

that sucks man

Go to just about any store and get it some f those dog bones for bad breath. My shepherd had nasty puppy breath and she gets in the horse pen all the time and goes at it, we found them and started giving her those and helped a lot. I forget the brand, but it will say on the package it will help with their breath. Mine seemed to love them.

Seems like they are called Greenies or something like that. Her puppy breath and nasty breath from everything she got into seemed to calm way down.

mce 07-23-2012 05:40 PM

Change its food. Also get your pet some dentasticks for the poo breath LOL :(

pornsprite 07-23-2012 06:02 PM

I have noticed my dogs will eat the poo of other dogs if a dog poops in my yard or other areas where me and my dogs walk often. I always felt they did it because they consider those places their territory and they remove other dogs markings as best as they can.

I obviously try to keep a good eye on them to make sure they don't eat the poo but I am not always as diligent with my observations of their activities as I should be.

My dogs don't each poo at dog parks though only the places that they mark as their territory.

epitome 07-23-2012 06:56 PM

Our dog did that as a puppy. We have a fresh mint plant that he helps himself to whenever he wants a fresh mouth. It won't hurt them. Try to find some fresh mint, he may love the taste like ours.

(Our dog is gay though and is particular about grooming, which may be why he likes natural mouthwash so much. I do not know if you will get the same mileage with a straight dog)

epitome 07-23-2012 06:56 PM

BTW, they say that dogs eating their own poop or others is a sign of a vitamin deficiency or something.

helterskelter808 07-23-2012 07:05 PM

Get another dog, and a cup.

I dunno, it can't be worse than breath that already tastes like shit.

adultchatpay 07-24-2012 10:26 AM

Just let it go, after few days you'll get used to it.

keep her on leash in the yard at home and if she goes anywhere near the poop correct her. she will get out of the habit. sounds mean but its the only way they will learn to leave it.

not a big fan of e-collars but people will use those too. Need to use it with a command though, zapping them without command does nothing.

candyflip 07-24-2012 11:16 AM

Dogs eat shit because they usually have some sort of deficiency. I'd have her checked out at the Vet's.

Far-L 07-24-2012 11:18 AM

One time eating a poop is not going to be the cause of lasting bad breath issues. More likely, it is due to the food you are feeding it.

If you are feeding it dry food, then you should know that most kibble style dried pet food will cause breath problems and tooth decay.

RyuLion 07-24-2012 11:23 AM

GFY for poo rescue FTW!!!

This isn't true at all. It usually depends on the breed. If your dog tends to have more of a field dog mentality they develop field dog traits simple as that. Easily trainable to get them to stop if you put the effort in.

TheSwed 07-25-2012 06:50 AM

change food

it can be poor nutrition or they just like doing it my bigger dog does it. its usually hers, the few times she had ate other dogs poo she got sick. So you got to be on the look out and keep the dog on a leash if it likes yard brownies.

John-ACWM 07-25-2012 08:22 PM

Guess it will go in a few days.

bean-aid 07-25-2012 09:33 PM

just hire currently sober to remove the poo... then your dog won't eat it

I don't mean to bump an old thread and don't usually, but I just had to take my cat to the vet, and unfortunately I lost her, but here is the deal, she tells me.

My cat was eating from her littler box and started to deteriorate in health and I ran her to the vet as fast as I could get her there, this topic came up, as she was doing it too... she had an iron deficiency, from a flea infestation she got from getting out my front door. She started feeling bad and we first thought she had gotten into something.

Turns out the fleas were terrible and they caused her red blood count to drop like a bomb and she was losing iron bad and couldn't make it up so she was looking for iron in her own litter box.

I remembered you had asked about this and I asked her if the same could be said for a dog, if they could have an iron deficiency as well. She said it could be possible and to feed them liver, raw, boiled, higher iron diets and so forth and they should be good as long as it hasn't gotten bad, which yours doesn't seem to have.

She went on to say it could be other problems, or she is just bored or acting out or any number of things, but to be safe, feed her a bit more iron and see if that fixes it, if it does then you know the issue causing it.

Again, sorry for the old bump, I just thought about this when my cat was doing it and asked her about it.

is there even a dog food in existence that isn't rich in iron? I really doubt it, unless you are feeding him rice..

how did your cat get a bad case of fleas without you knowing about it?

It wasn't a complete infestation, she was deathly allergic to them and she had gotten outside. We bathed her, but they had already started biting her pretty good and her immune system wasn't strong enough to battle it, she was old. 11 yrs old. She had been outside for 2-3 days, we couldn't find her.

And yes that's what I thought too, but she said some animals, like humans, need more iron because their bodies don't maintain it as well as others.

My daughter had a diabetic dog, which I had also never heard of. lol

fris 07-31-2012 01:11 PM

smell is gone now ;) thanks currently sober

She didn't make it, she was old and her immune system couldn't take it. The vet was even surprised about this one, she didn't have THAT many on her, she had some, but not just covering her like one would think. I keep Revolution on them in the summer.. that is some powerful shit, but she just couldn't take it.... it attacked her immune system within a very short period of time.

CurrentlySober 07-31-2012 01:21 PM

Sorry to hear that.

We have a Cesar Millan amongst us!

My youngest dog - as well as my daughter's youngest dog - used to try to eat the shit out of the cat box. They grew out of it.

Dogs sniff turds - they like the smell of turds, oddly enough. If the turd they're sniffing smells particularly meaty - they'll fucking eat it. They can't tell the difference between shit and chicken.

Agreed. Try to find owner of other dog that pooped. Ask him what he feeds his dog. Since your dog seems to like it coming out he might prefer it fresh...er :upsidedow
