Newly Discovered Near Earth Asteroid
http://www.spaceweather.com/
A relatively large asteroid, just discovered on August 28th, will fly past the Earth-Moon system on Sept 14th only 2.8 million km (7.4 lunar distances) away. 2012 QG42 is about as wide as three football fields and comes to us from just beyond the orbit of Mars. Astronomers who are now monitoring the space rock say it shines about as brightly as a 15th magnitude star. What's scary to me is that it was just discovered. So how many more are lurking out there this close and this big? |
who knows, space is so monumentally huge and even the biggest asteroids are so small in comparison there is no telling how many near Earth asteroids there are. The best we can hope for is that this is rare and there isnt some extinction level one lurking out there in a blind spot

crap im gonna go buy me a metal helmet I dont want that thing bashing me on the head anytime soon :Oh crap
|
hmm should I delay the launch of my new site because of this? If no one is going to be around to view it why bother... :/
|
Let me guess. You were doing your daily search on doomsday news. You really can't wait for shit to happen do you? So you can turn into the redneck Rambo you are and shoot people who come to steal your 5 year supply of food.

nice this should hit us and we can then go to mars

but i digress.. my opinion on why that's being tracked is for 'data' for expeditions, most likely with the end purpose of 'mining' or 'space warfare' research |
man now that i think about it, what if they're thinking about using these asteroids as transports? the rock ur posting about loops around mars and comes back to earth?
clever if so |

Choker, I need a list of things I'll need to plan my survival future. Can you provide?

There is millions of potential dooms day asteroids or comets out there. Its really just a matter of time before we're hit again. Hopefully we figure out a way to deflect them back out to space before one is really heading our way.
On another note I believe there is many potential threats that could disrupt our way of living and being prepared with food water and guns doesn't make you white trash in the least. People in the west have this "won't happen to me" mentality. They couldn't be more wrong. |
yeah there are lots of asteroids out there...we should really have a multi point defense system in place. Something like a rocket(s) that matches speed and releases a swarm of spider like modules with self attaching feet, to pepper the surface of an asteroid. Each module should have a blaster or method of propulsion on a surface which can be adjusted within its own radius. So if it gets installed upside down, it just rotates until the engine is pointing into space. When all engines are firing, they are controlled in a fashion to allow them to alter the trajectory of said asteroid.
Since the earth is moving away just as fast, it wont take much movement to throw the asteroid out of a collision vector. You are welcome, please feel free to pass this onto spaceX or Nasa |
I hope this sorry ass earth gets hit by a major rock within my lifespan.. we need a good cleaning

If a asteroid were headed this way, governments would do shit to get the economy going, would go into massive debt since it doesnt matter anymore, hmmmm |
Asteroids are like spam. One of them will get through eventually. Hopefully not anytime soon. :Oh crap
|
I always wonder if a large one is found on a collision course with earth if anyone would alert civilians. It's not like anyone can do anything about it, and alerting us would only cause chaos and panic.
