qwe 10-26-2012 10:12 PM

DBS.US 10-26-2012 10:17 PM

Don't you think it's kinda ridiculous to buy W8 then pay for software to make it look like Win7?

when it's 39$ extra $5 is nothing...

I don't think I'm going to miss the start button. I've been using PC's since DOS 5.0, and before that Amiga. I'll just learn the new thing. I've seen people who are proficient with the new windows, and they're fast as shit with it. If you get good with the keyboard shortcuts it looks pretty cool to use.

I didn't :pimp

I have no burning desire to have the latest and greatest operating system.

I have a brand new computer and I can run anything, but I can't invest the time into fixing it if it gets fucked up.

baryl 10-27-2012 12:07 AM

I did today and like it so far. I never used the preview version so this is my first experience with it. It is a pretty good performance upgrade from 7.
It takes a little getting used to but it's not nearly as bad as some are saying. It's just different from they've been using so it's a little disorienting at first.

That said, there's no pressing need to upgrade from 7 anytime soon for people that don't want to.

By the way, if you bought a new computer in the past 3 months (I think?) you can get the upgrade for 14.99

The start button is basically the Metro interface. Once you get it personalized up to your needs and get rid of all that Bing and IE default crap it's actually pretty cool. Also, the windows key toggles between the traditional desktop and Metro. Figuring that out helped me a lot.

I can test win8 on some machine but to update over win7, no way

Not talking about the money.
Just the idea.

Anyone can actually get the $14.99 deal, just lie about the purchase date and make up where you bought it. Works like a charm.

I honestly did have a qualifying PC for the 14.99 upgrade but when I entered my information in, they didn't really do anything at all to verify it. I just entered when I bought it and the type of PC, no serial numbers or anything.

Wndows 8 is not really that bad. As has been mentioned, the "Modern UI" (Metro) essentially is a replacement for the Start Button.

What I did find so far is that the "Metro" interface is not really that bad for personal surfing. However, for business/productivity, I think most will find themselves jumping back to the "classic desktop" or wishing they stayed on Windows 7.

The Apps that come by default, for example the Weather, News, Sports, etc all scroll sideways are are very minimally designed -- and thus load real fast. I think the horizontal scrolling may be uncomfortable for a lot of people. It's clear, very clear, that the emphasis on this was placed with mobile devices in mind.

I found it a royal pain in the ass when using it on a triple display.

Frankly, I can see where MS is heading with this, but I do believe that they'll be waiting a while before businesses adopt it en masse.

Upgraded and all is well. Tiles not really an issue as you can delete shit ya don't need and keep it basic with shit like weather, stocks, itunes etc... and make the first tile desktop and buy clicking that takes ya back to your normal desktop minus a start button. Takes a little bit to get used to I guess but a lot less painful then I thought it would be.

Only issue I encountered was the version of Kaspersky I was using wasn't 100% compatible with windows 8 so would lose firewall and a few other things so my options were to wait until it was compatible or downgrade to a version that was. I chose to switch to a different company as I wanted to keep a full security suite instead of just basic protection that was compatible.
