Football v Socccer

I'm watching an NFL game and a soccer game at the same time right now. Lions v Seahawks, Chelsea v Man Utd.

Living in North America I'm getting more and more into NFL every game I watch, it's a great sport. However, it will never replace Soccer for me. The Soccer game is end to end, attacking, flowing skillful play. The Lions game has been on 12 mins and no one has moved 10 yards yet. I've saw more commercials than game time at this point. Soccer is uninterupted for the entire 45 mins of each half.

Do the hardcore NFL fans really give soccer a chance?

slapass 10-28-2012 10:18 AM

Once they do, they never go back. I cannot watch football any more. It is even worse if they go to games. Football has so much down time that the fans don't really get into it.

adult-help 10-28-2012 10:24 AM

yeah, i read that it's like 15 minutes of play and the rest is ads,standing...

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...055561406.html

this really sucks and is boring.. but then again ,some people watch chess and are not bored too..

lucas131 10-28-2012 10:29 AM

chelsea vs seahawks

Ross 10-28-2012 10:36 AM

Updates

NFL: Seahawks scored a 3 point kick, Lions scored a touch down. Been maybe 30 commercials and some good drives.

Soccer: Around 6 scoring chances, still end to end, Chelsea have 2 players sent off and are down to 9 men v Utd 11. Utd scored to make it 3-2. Still high tempo. 0 commercials.

lucas131 10-28-2012 10:37 AM

2:3, wow nice score nice game :thumbsup

Redrob 10-28-2012 10:39 AM

Personally, I prefer rugby. Footballs contact and no down time to speak of.
The European Leagues and Australian/New Zealand Leagues have some great rivalries.

pornguy 10-28-2012 10:49 AM

I gave soccer a chance..

Hate it. Cant get over the guys throwing themselves on the ground holding a leg or arm or head and 22 seconds later running down the field hell bent on that ball.

oh and the mickey mouse gloves on the goalie.

I can understand that, it drives me nuts too but I'd be interested to know what game you watched. I've just watched 90 mins of this game and I only saw 1 player throw themselves to the ground trying to cheat. He was red carded (second yellow) and had to go off, causing his team to go down a man.

Not sure what is wrong with the gloves the goalkeepers wear tho, do you want them wearing huge gloves the size of baseball gloves?

you have a problem with gloves but not with a player needing oxygen every time he runs 40 yards?

me thinks you didn't really "give soccer a chance..."

btw why do you think wide receivers wear gloves too?

Wide receives wear gloves that fit. Not gloves that are 3 times the size of a human hand.

Soccer players wear shorts and a tshirt. the pads the football players use weigh at least 18 pounds.

on top of that something tells me there is not a soccer player on the planet that could with or without pads take a hit from one of those guys.

pornguy 10-28-2012 11:07 AM

To me and my personal opinion is, Soccer is boring. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same about American football. I have watched Many soccer games and just can not get into them.

Cant get into basket ball either. toooo many people throwing themselves on the floor calling foul when someone runs into them.

:)

Klen 10-28-2012 11:21 AM

Well i find both soccer and football boring, but playing it's good.

see what I mean, there was no point pretending "you gave soccer a chance..." :2 cents:

Hockey gloves are even bigger. Hockey players need padding, very little control. A goalie traps the ball between his hands and his body, or punches a ball that can travel more than 100km/h he needs some padding and some grip. Wide receiver just need grip. gloves serve different function. get it?

Soccer is much less structured than Football where a head coach, an offensive coach, etc. will call the play for the quarterback and the rest of the team to execute. Soccer leaves more room for improvisation and vision. So can a soccer player take a hit, of course not. but can a football player do what Ronaldinho does? not a chance.

I like both sports btw i think it is difficult enjoying watching a sport when there is no emotional involvement. it's always boring when you don't really care who wins.

He means the opposite. Before the advent of overpaid pansy soccer players who fall over as if they've been shot if anyone goes near them, keepers didn't even wear gloves. Then they wore them for protection. Then they became about size.

As for caring who wins, why? Both sports are purely about money and have been for a long time.

I fully respect your opinion given you have actually watched some soccer. It's the people who say derogatory things about the sport that anger me. I give every sport a chance (apart from Cricket - I just plain hate it) and will learn the rules, teams, players in order to decide if it's for me or not. I enjoy all the major sports here and day by day I'm learning more about them to be able to participate in conversations about them.

Likewise, most of the people I talk to are open to learning about Soccer too. I think the attitude towards Soccer is changing in North America. Give it 5-10 more years and it'll be one of the major sports.

Somewhat agreee...BUT...
At LEAST the teams aren't sponsored like a lot of soccer teams.

The Carnival Cruise Lines Miami Dolphins
VS
The Post It Notes by 3M Minnesota Vikings

try stopping a football at full whack with your hands and you'll see (feel) why they wear gloves!

Scott McD 10-28-2012 03:03 PM

Soccer wins it for me. I like my American sports, and have found myself sitting up very late many nights watching an NFL or a Baseball game till the end, but like has been said already the amount of time spent with nothing happening and constant fucking commercial breaks, I enjoy watching a big soccer game over that anytime.

In just over a weeks time i'll be going to the Celtic vs Barcelona match and it will be incredible. The atmosphere is gonna be electric. Which is actually something else I don't get about US sports. The crowd don't ever seem to have any songs or chants or anything about their team. Just high fives and whooop noises when something happens. I've been to soccer games that would make you shit your pants...

LOL!

Which soccer teams are sponsored in such a fashion that the sponsoring company name is before the actual team name?

It is common practice to sponsor Stadiums, but that happens in North American Sports too. Lions stadium is called Ford Field. Miami Heat stadium is The American Airlines Arena.

Welshmorph 10-28-2012 04:00 PM

Being British 'soccer' will always be my game. West Brom have been my life since I was old enough to think.
But I've also followed the NFL passionately from 1984 onwards, ever since I saw Marino slinging pass after pass to Duper & Clayton.
I love both sports. And with that said, JETS SUCK!

You really thought that was a dive? Even after the replays?? :)

If you like to see 1 hour of actual played sport and 2 hours of commercials the Football is for you!

body 10-29-2012 08:19 AM

Those tv breaks @ football hell, I'm not located in the us and I watched a game live in tv and I saw the same commercials every 2 minutes
I think americans love all the stats for every player?
I love soccer but most of these millionaires are pussys on the field, actors, crying like a baby
Football looks more like a real man game and soccer (sometimes) .... ;-)

Evans touched him but nowhere near enough to go down like that I don't think. I could be wrong, I was watching it on my laptop and didn't have the screen maximized. I think Chelsea got the raw end of the decisions yesterday as a whole but Utd deserved their win.

I'm with you Ross. I used to be big into NFL, played fantasy, the whole 9. But after being introduced to soccer back when the US was playing in the World Cup in South Korea I was hooked. Years later I tried to watch a football game and was bored stiff.. nothing but huddles, time-outs, video reviews, challenges.. and all just to slowly inch up the field. I'll take the flowing uninterrupted nature of soccer any day.

Unfortunately, the referee decided that game.

I cant watch soccer. Its too boring for me. You watch a game for what seems like 3 or 4 hours only for each team to score only one goal and it ends tied. no OT to determine a winner. To me its a bunch of skinny guys running back and forth for hours and they fall as soon as some one bumps them. :1orglaugh

that 90 minutes feels like 4 hours with those girly men running back and forth not scoring.

1. In football you run and rip someone to the ground and then do a happy dance. In soccer you run and slide and hit someone in the shin guard? And then help them up?

2. In football you use brute strength to throw a ball 85-yards for six points. In soccer you use your whole body strength to kick a ball 85 yards for a slight chance at one point.

3 In football when you score you run around and head-but each other and chest bump each other, because its awesome. In soccer when you score a point you high five each other and only head-but when your angry.

4. Football is the No.1 contact sport, soccer is No. 2.

5. More people watch football in America then soccer and that's, because we suck at soccer and are amazing at football.

mamaliga 10-29-2012 10:58 AM

1. A guy celebrates every 20 seconds for doing his job, you made a tackle, so what?
2. I'm pretty sure Quarterbacks are using much more than their arm to launch that ball, they work out their entire body to be able to do that.
3. Don't even know where to go with this one, players celebrate 1 tackle better than most touchdowns
4. True
5. And now we have the truth.... you guys aren't the best at something so won't welcome it. Could have just said this and left out every other point

:thumbsup

i've played and watch both. both are far more interesting once you understand the inner workings of the games. I say the same thing when explaining baseball to people. if you don't know whats going on that game is the worst to watch, if you actually do then its endlessly enjoyable.

both are pretty damn rough i should add, i've been banged around a soccer pitch just as hard and I was a running back in football so definitely seen both ends of it.

I agree with you almost 100%. I played baseball as a kid for years, watched it for years. I understand the inner workings of the game. But...once I started watching hockey, baseball was pretty much ruined for me. The pace is just so slow. Honestly, as far as baseball goes, it's much more enjoyable (and exciting) to watch my son's Little League games.
