Anyway to fix a broken SD card?

My daughter got a hold of the wife's SD card, and got her teeth into it a little bit. Doesn't look too bad, but there's one little mark from her biting it, and a few of the plastic pins covering the contacts are broken on one side.

Card doesn't appear to have much damage, but it will not read. My laptop card reader recognizes there's a card in there, but refuses to read it. Tried it on 3 other card readers and they're not even recognizing it.

Is there anyway to recover the images and videos? Not sure if I can try unsoldering the memory chip and soldering it into a new card, or if I should find some kind of data recovery company.

:Oh crap :helpme :(

Have you tried to ask Google? Hear she is pretty smart

There's a program for windows that I've used (forget the name) that you use to recover deleted files from cards. It'd give that a try - it was only about $20, and I think it had a free try to see what filenames would be available.

I tried this before i emailed a few data recovery places and nobody wanted to help

adult-help 10-28-2012 08:12 PM

not sure if this could help or no but long time ago i used this when it was still free:

http://www.dposoft.net/#b_hddhid

this tool fixed the HD bad sectors when any other program didn't even read it.I was really blown away. Maybe they offer the SD regeneration too,i dont know. You can test it..

Try something like PhotoRec - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download - it's pretty good at recovering data even from formatted drives. No idea if it will work on your problem though, but it probably can't hurt. If it works, consider a donation, because it's nifty software.

Data recovery software will not work.
If you are handy, buy an identical chip.

Break open the screwed up chip.
Pay attention, you want to do this on the second chip with as little damage as possible.
Slip in the memory chip from the broken card.

Look on youtube for video instructions, she's owned by google and almost as smart.

Yeah, smartass. I've tried google. Not sure if I trust those who want $30 or DataTech Labs who wants $399.95

Figured some GFY'ers may have been through this before considering there are a few content shooters here.

Seems like for a price, that they will try to fix your card, or recover the data to a physically damaged SD card, and you only pay for the amount of data recovered (how much is the data worth to you?).

Good luck! :thumbsup

That just seems so ridiculous for 4GB.

I found a site that would do it for $30 last night, but I'll have to look for it again. $30-50 seems reasonable and I'd pay that in a heart beat. There's nothing but pictures and videos of my 18 month old daughter, but still. Rape!

I agree - again, it comes down to what it is worth to you (if you don't find a less expensive alternative). I was simply trying to help you. :)

Please note that the price is for repairing a physically broken card and recovering data.

If you can get by simply using the SanDisk RescuePro, download the free trial and see if it works (which is about $40 for the standard version):

I had given up hope on recovering data from a bad card, but was still able to recover the data using RescuePro. I also used it another time to recover data from a disk, even though the files appeared to be erased/deleted.

Oh, I know you were just trying to help. Didn't mean to come off an an ass towards you at all. Sorry if I did.

I would try the programs to recover, but it's not even pulling up the card now, so there's not much sense. Tried one program and it just locks up trying to access it. :(

I'll have to see what the wife wants to do. Priceless pics of the daughter on there from her first hair cut, first halloween, etc. :(

marlboroack 10-29-2012 06:12 PM

Replace the broken objects on the SD card. If everything is done correctly. Should work. Order the parts broken from the maker of the SD card.

RKLover 10-29-2012 10:08 PM

Guess I was not clear.

Data Recovery software cannot repair physical damage.

If you want it done cheap, it is a Do It Yourself job
If there are not instructions on utube, this is still how you do it.
