A bit of help please.

My computer is downloading very slow, it's making surfing and getting emails a real pain.

It's only my computer and the speed test was slow just on my computer. did a virus scan and deleted some crap.

BIGTYMER 10-30-2012 02:05 AM

If you're running windows xp do a search for "defrag."

Windows Vista and Windows 7 defrag automatically but windows xp does not.
It may help some. Windows has security essentials, just use that as it's good enough to compete with the big antiviruses for most instances.

grumpy 10-30-2012 03:23 AM

find all *.tmp files on your computer and remove them. Next, disk / properties / scanchek

Phoenix 10-30-2012 03:24 AM

try spybot...free and easy

CurrentlySober 10-30-2012 03:26 AM

Seriously, why not just get a new PC?

They are cheap as chips these days, and it will save you a lot of missing about.

I mean, you can get a new box for less than $400 these days, that will do all you need it to do, and if you dont, and end up missing just one content order for $3000 - Then your on a false economy...

johnnyloadproductions 10-30-2012 03:42 AM

Run CCleaner, that'll do it.

Trying the defrag, the computer seems to run fine. It's mail and surfing that's fucked.
Switching to another computer and might send this one to the shop.

Make sure there are no knots in your cords.

EddyTheDog 10-30-2012 05:44 AM

If its wireless have you got any new electrical equipment?

I got a new portable landline phone and it fucked my wireless up for days until I worked out what it was.

Penny24Seven 10-30-2012 05:49 AM

sounds like you have been hacked by someone, Is there anyone that does not like you? Or maybe it is time to upgrade from atari

DVTimes 10-30-2012 05:50 AM

These two are free and get most if not all the junk:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

HitmanPro: http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you do not have a virus scanner, this is great. BUT do not use if your running a virus scanner as they tend to crash your pc if you run more than one scanner.:

Avast: http://www.avast.com/index

DVTimes 10-30-2012 05:52 AM

If its a slow speed only on the net, contact your service provider as it could be a line problem.

Paul Markham 10-30-2012 07:02 AM

It seems to be just my computer and is fucking up my surfing and mail server. So it's off to the shop for someone who knows what it's about to look into it. Women are far easier to get to work properly than computers. LOL

they are temporary file, you can delete them. It fills up your disk and windows keeps track of them

candyflip 10-30-2012 07:07 AM

A sucker is about to get suckered. Once something is out of warranty, just buy a new one.

so everytime your pc is a bit slower because of some malware you can easily remove with free programs, you buy a new one?

DVTimes 10-30-2012 07:17 AM

try this paul:

1. click on your 'Computer' icon.

2. click on 'C' drive (your main drive).

3. click on 'windows' folder.

4 click on 'temp' folder

delete all the files in this folder.

for best results do this in safe mode.

to get to safe mode shut your pc down and as it restarts press f8. do this as your pc starts or it will be too late.

DVTimes 10-30-2012 07:19 AM

try also:

Advanced SystemCare: http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html

This is the best advice here. I had a virus before that none of the anti virus programs could find or fix. I ran spybot and after that all was good. I was so happy I donated...lol

No, I dont, but then I understand computers inside and out...

Paul doesn't. He cant even re-install windows. And with them being so cheap, why not just save the messing about, and get an up-to-date one?

I'm not suggesting he rushes to an apple store and gets a brand new iMac for top dollar. Just a basic box that he can plug his mouse, keyboard and monitor into... :2 cents:

That might be the problem.

Once I open Chrome, this goes mad.

Even Chrome dosen't like you... :(

PAR 10-30-2012 09:59 AM

Those look like normal numbers for chrome, looks like you may also be running plugins in chrome.. you can disable the plugins you dont need and just turn them on/off as needed in chrome.

What is your OS?
Laptop or PC.. some specs are needed.
Scan for spyware/malware..
-1

Go to "Start > Run" and type "cmd" (no quotes), then select "OK"

Type "ipconfig /release" (no quotes) and press "Enter"

Once the prompt returns, type "ipconfig /renew" (no quotes), then hit "Enter,"

Finally, type "exit" (without quotes) then press "Enter" to close the window

-2
in task manager:
performance>resource monitor...> Network
check processes with network Activity

-3
Have you added anything new to your network
new router etc..

-4
How old is your computer?
Have you upgraded your network drivers etc.. (try updating them if you have not)

-5
If possible test an older restore point see if that helps.

- 6
download browser Avant : http://www.avantbrowser.com/
If that loads nice and fast then its something in your browser or plugins
remove plugins, uninstal browser and reinstall after a reboot may help.

-7 worst case back your stuff up and format c:
- 8
install linux as a secondary OS for when you have issues to make sure its not just your ISP or none WINDOWS related issue.

Once I open Chrome, this goes mad.

Chrome uses a process for the browser and another for tabs, then also uses separate processes for each plugin that it's using to make Chrome faster and more stable, so if a plugin crashes, the browser is still working. I'm not sure if that's what's slowing down your computer, but try disabling some extensions that you don't need.

Thanks guy, I think it's my computer and the connection. so getting an expert in. Not my field at all and never will be. Thanks for the help.

Paul Markham 10-30-2012 03:33 PM

It's definitely a connection issue, not Chrome or my mail. It seems to be running and stopping all the time. Tried loads of anti virus programs and cleaned it up. Still runs and stops. Getting the connection people in tomorrow.

It is difficult to offer proper advice without knowing what equipment you are using.

I imagine you already rebooted your modem and router. If you did not do a hard reboot on those (just pull the power for 30 seconds), please do so now.

If you are connecting to the internet by WiFi, this is Golden advice from Ed-dog here. Cell phones, cordless phones, any other wireless equipment, including your neighbors WiFi (if they are close by) can jam your signal.

You might try changing the channel your router transmits on until you find a clear channel.

And if you're modem is one of those old Motorola Surfboards, the firmware is no longer supported. In that case, get a new modem.
