Youtube : Way, way, way too many commercials on it now

I used to love Youtube, and didn't mind when the commercial started appearing... but over the past few months more and more seem to be popping up, and tonight, every second click gave me a commercial. Even worse, it was for things which were for the exact opposite of the content I was interested in.

Boo, Youtube! (I know you're watching GFY)

They missed revenue targets last quarter. I think it's a last minute push to make sure they beat it this quarter.

kane 12-19-2012 01:50 AM

The only time it really annoys me is if I get a 20 second commercial in front of a 30 second or less video.

d-null 12-19-2012 01:52 AM

used to be you could always click to skip the rest of the commercial, but lately they took that option away often, forcing you to watch the whole lousy 15 second commercial first

WTFBucks 12-19-2012 02:07 AM

really annoying cause the commercial is always twice as loud as the video I'm watching

AllAboutCams 12-19-2012 02:13 AM

way too many for a free service

DamianJ 12-19-2012 02:33 AM

They have to monetise somehow.

Would you pay for a premium ad free youtube? How much?

Mr Pheer 12-19-2012 02:49 AM

I use Chrome with the Adblock extension and I dont get any commercials on Youtube.

Dirty F 12-19-2012 03:01 AM

thanks for the tip, didn't realize it would work with in-video ads

how do they do that?

They block where the invideo ads are coming from.

Adblock Plus... It doesn't work on every site but it's pretty good.

crazydollars 12-19-2012 05:01 AM

If you don't like it - don't pay for it.

Oh wait..

CurrentlySober 12-19-2012 05:12 AM

Chrome + Add Block Plus = No sign of ANY Commercials whatsoever...

mopek1 12-19-2012 05:15 AM

I don't mind ads but it's getting worse and worse.

seeandsee 12-19-2012 05:19 AM

I don't get commercials but now every vid is covered with an ad

Chris 12-19-2012 05:37 AM

i dont mind the ad's all that much i understand i use alot of bw for free

One thing i did notice is a handful of 30 second ad's are no longer skipable after 5 seconds that used to be

I've never seen any ads on Youtube. I thought it was my location.
Good to hear that it's my Adblock Plus installation doing the work.

BIGTYMER 12-19-2012 08:09 AM

I wonder if clients still get charged for those blocked ads?

Ah but which is more annoying?

YouTube commercials

-or-

Spam/Hacking

:Oh crap

Tom_PM 12-19-2012 09:28 AM

I don't mind because a) the advertiser is an idiot who uses 30 second+ commercials and I can skip those after 5, and ALWAYS do. Or b) the advertiser is realizing that the internet is not television and limiting to 15 second commercials and I let those play even if it has a skip option.

Support advertisers... it might be you.

Again, at first nobody seemed to mind the ads on youtube. It started to become annoying as it got progressively in-your-face.

AllAboutCams 12-19-2012 09:47 AM

6,688,566 users of adblock
310,000,000 users of chrome

303,311,434 chrome users without adblock

So that is 2.1% of people use adblock

So say i buy 100,000 hits 2100 of those Wont see ads
Im paying $3 per k $300 total im going to loose $6.30

Not a very big problem now but what happens when browsers come with it pre installed

It always works on Youtube, but sites like Hulu.com make you disable it before you can watch their free videos. I'm sure eventually Youtube will catch on.

adultchatpay 12-19-2012 10:37 AM

adblock works like magic

We don't hate all tubes. Youtube will at least remove all the user's content after they are caught infringing on copyrights three times - "3 strikes". They are at least trying. The scumbags at Manwin haven't even done that much after years of people suggesting it to them. There has been one excuse after another. They know damn well what they are doing and in my opinion their lack of reasonable measures opens them up to a potentially successful lawsuit. The problem is no one wants to push it. Yet.

Scott McD 12-19-2012 11:48 AM

Looks like it's time i used adblock...

that still doesn't explain it, if a video is trying to play and you block the ip, it should still just hang there, but the way it efficiently skips the entire advertisements tells me there is something else going on, as if youtube's scripting is currently written to cooperate with the adblockers

Really? Wow I didn't know you could do that. Funny how Google gives you the tools to block their own ads.

24/7 Blogging Crew 12-19-2012 03:35 PM

I guess they have to make $$$ too

beemk 12-19-2012 03:42 PM

When you give away free porn content do you not put advertisements on it? They are in this to make money, don't be a fucking hypocrite.

Does seem that way. When I block an invideo ad it hangs for about 5 seconds and then plays the video. Some sort of fallback..

baddog 12-19-2012 11:56 PM

How many popups you guys use?

yeah, maybe it could be google's way of not breaking the whole video load if one part of the network doesn't serve?

shake 01-27-2013 01:12 PM

It's not just ads supporting youtube itself. For people publishing videos on youtube myself included, you have the option to link your adsense account and monetize the videos.

I don't mind the ads on YouTube.

I would hate to see their bandwidth bills.

Has YouTube ever made money yet ?

What really annoys me these days are autoplaying flash video ads.

Yup the same people that say downloading a torrent kills their revenue will happily block ads killing someone else's revenue.

If you don't like the ads don't watch YouTube.

The original poster didn't say he didn't like ads ... he said it was getting ridiculous.

I don't mind ads either. With Youtube they have the video on one side and a big square ad right beside it that you see all the time. That's fine.

It's when you 'have' to watch a commercial before a video (and it becomes frequent) AND you get this banner on the screen at the same time.

Nothing wrong with ads it's just getting to be a bit much.

Exactly this. Somebody needs to pay for all that bandwidth.

johnnyloadproductions 01-27-2013 10:09 PM

I noticed FB is packed with ads, especially on mobile. Sponsored stories that is.

SomeCreep 01-28-2013 02:08 AM

Your not losing anywhere close to $6.30 unless your buying 100% chrome traffic.
