Steampunk SF is actually a fairly short list - steampunk caught on more in graphic novels and television and anime.
A lot of people credit "The Difference Engine" by Gibson and Sterling as the original steampunk novel. It's okay, not great. For a good novel with victorian and steampunk elements it's very hard to beat Stephenson's "the Diamond Age". The Barouque Cycle books are steampunky-ish. Anathem has some oddly steampunkyish qualities. "Steamboy", the anime, is probably the classic example of steampunk imagery and plotlines. Steampunk caught on as an art form because it's snarky and easy to make, easy to build video props and costumery for screen production. |
