J. Falcon 12-26-2012 11:58 AM

That looks awesome.

keysync 12-26-2012 12:00 PM

Next time stuff a few garlic cloves in the meat.

It's a nice extra flavor.

beerptrol 12-26-2012 12:01 PM

I fried one on thanksgiving, but decided to smoke a turkey and ham for Christmas dinner

2MuchMark 12-26-2012 12:04 PM

Tracy and I were talking about this the other day. I have never tasted fried turkey. We (and my family) have always enjoyed baked turkey on christmas. It takes about 5 hours to bake one and the house smells amazing all day of course. Will have to try your way one day.

I agree...there's no better way to make a turkey. It comes out so fucking juicy.

But there's too much of a "science project" thing for me to attempt myself. Also, I don't want to end up looking like I just stepped out of a Hellraiser movie.

Markul 12-26-2012 02:39 PM

It's safe enough, but like with everything, you have to know what you're doing:winkwink:

I do a fried and baked turkey every year for Thanksgiving. The fried one this year was amazing. Injected it with a garlic, butter mix first.

Choopa Phil 12-27-2012 09:59 AM

Ahh nothing like a good ole turkey fry. You should try peanut oil too, we've done that here with great results!

Pretty much...you can buy them from Home Depot for around 40 or 50 dollars as a complete kit. you just need a big "grille type" propane tank thats not included

I used to fry turkeys years ago but I have done it in maybe twenty years now.

baddog 12-27-2012 12:22 PM

Only had a fried turkey once; guess they did not know what they were doing as it seemed greasy to me.

Thats what happens with the oil isnt hot enough before you put the turkey in or they kept taking it in and out to check to see if it was done cooking inside.

I figured it had something to do with using a multi-grade viscosity (20-50) as opposed to straight 50 weight

brassmonkey 12-27-2012 12:38 PM

you put that lawn jockey in the picture on purpose :1orglaugh :helpme

spazlabz 12-27-2012 12:48 PM

how many stories have I heard about those things exploding in the oil and burning down houses? A LOT hahahaha but it looks so good!

Hell YEAH :1orglaugh:thumbsup I have 2 of them a black and a white, they are all beat up, showing a lot of age, saw them at an auction years ago, so I bought them as a joke :winkwink:

Besides, wanted to look like classy white trash :Graucho

BVF 12-27-2012 01:55 PM

I fried a turkey again for this thanksgiving. But this time, I made a "batter" to paste the turkey with before I put it in the grease....it came out like fried chicken, with a crispy battered skin.

greg80 12-27-2012 02:09 PM

I agree, best way to make a turkey. Once you try it, it's the only way to go. But it is impossible to find peanut oil here in Europe.

If, its done right it's never ever greasy. Crispy skin on the outside , real juicy and tender on the inside :2 cents:

spazlabz it's not a toy by far, lot of the accidents you hear of are because of drunkeness, or plain stupidity. Some people do it in the garage, or other semi enclosed area. It's asking for trouble.

I have done this numerous times now, always outside, well ventilated area. Yes, its close to a building, which is my bike shed, but the reason for that is, if it starts raining, there is an awning over the door, that I can use to shield the pot from raindrops. Hot oil and water dont mix well.

You also need to keep an eye on the temp of the oil(375) and the height of the flame from the burner. If it starts to get too hot, turn the flame down, otherwise the bird will get too crispy, burnt on the outside, but the inside will not be cooked. It needs to be cooked at an even temp so many minutes per lb.

In the final analysis, use common sense:2 cents:

John-ACWM 12-28-2012 07:31 AM

Damn, it looks great :thumbsup
