Win7 or Win8

Im building a new machine and im wondering what people think of win8.
It looks ok on some of the videos ive seen but im not sure if i should not stick to win7

soopamanluva 01-04-2013 06:54 AM

if you are plan to work on that machine stick with win 7. I have win 8 and had a few driver problems with graphics and sound (few of my friends had the same problem as well so it's not a isolated thing). I updated it so now is better. But again if you work any kind of development on that machine stick with win7.

Get a Mac Mini, comes with the OS , just add a monitor keyboard and mouse. Around $600-$650 at JB Hifi.

I'm using win 8 and the only issue I had was a logitch mouse not working to well, no updated drivers yet... all I use the machines for are editing video, editing stills, surfing and email and book keeping... there was a bit of an issue with vegas video however after I changed mouse it went away... I really like win8 faster and smother

I wanted it to work. I really, really did. I built a machine with Windows 8 and I'm regretting it. After installing a PCI Express Card, I got a message saying my drive was locked. After searching forums I found the locked drive error was common for many different reasons.

I wasted about 12 hours in an endless cycle of repair mode, reinstall, until my cousin suggested opening the machine and clearing the CMOS - and that worked! However, I cannot get Windows 8 to recognize my DV tapes thru firewire (or recognize them in any fashion). I'm probably going to go to a pirated Windows 7, my fuck you to Microsoft for having wasted my time on money on WIndows 8.

Are you saying XP is better for transferring DV tapes (makes sense as it's an older technology) -

Cause if that's the case, I'll just get a copy of XP and start there - never had a problem with XP and skipped Vista and went to 7 a few months after it came out and was happy with it.

Cameltoepro 01-04-2013 08:48 AM

I use win 7 pro an love it. I will not be changing anytime soon.

I am pretty amazed at how many problems people are reporting with Windows 8. It works very well for us. I upgraded 7 machines, business and personal, and not one has any issue.

I did, however, run the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor software prior to upgrading to obtain a list of potential issues and then made sure I had all the updated software versions and hardware drivers on hand for the actual upgrades themselves.

If anything, Win8 has improved productivity for us, especially in a multi-monitor environment per machine. And I find it noticeably faster than Windows 7. I should also mention that all of our machines are no more than 1 year old, so all hardware is also relatively new. Perhaps that's another reason why we just have not had any problems?

Wait one more year for 8...

Sarah_Jayne 01-04-2013 10:22 AM

I've only watched people use Windows 8 and that is enough for me. The phone based outdoor advertising really doesn't work for me either. You tell me the name of somebody and then show me a phone with a bunch of blocks that can barely be read from a distance. It isn't making me need to go try it and I am a techie person.

Validus 01-05-2013 09:00 AM

Nah. Windows 8 is no good right now. Not for business/work use anyhow.

prezzz 01-05-2013 09:01 AM

Don't go with Win8 until you actually try it for at least couple hours on someone else's computer.

AllAboutCams 01-05-2013 09:03 AM

/thread im going with Win 7

blogger2 01-05-2013 09:34 AM

SpicyM 01-05-2013 11:29 AM

I am still on XP. No problems at all.

seeandsee 01-05-2013 02:22 PM

suesheboy 01-05-2013 02:30 PM

Just build a new super box last week and windows 7 for me.

Socks 01-05-2013 04:54 PM

I'm loving Windows 8, upgraded all 3 of my PC's here, and left my laptop with Win7.

In my opinion it looks better, functions better, lots of little nice added details, and I like that I can launch any program simply by pressing windows key and starting to type the name of the program.

I find I just don't use the metro interface or its apps. It's a non issue.

Rockhound 01-05-2013 06:30 PM

flash crashes my firefox when websites have flash on them under Windows 8. I bought my laptop yesterday. Apparently this is a common issue ...
