LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Jeremiah B. Perkins, the former leader of internet movie group IMAGiNE, was sentenced to five years in prison on a piracy charge, the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday.

Perkins, 40, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement in August.

In addition to the prison sentence, Perkins was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution.

The five-year prison sentence and three years supervised release represent the maximum sentence that Perkins faced, but he could have received a maximum fine of $250,000.

Oops!

I said "owner" in the title but it says "Leader" in the article.

I don't want to get sued for misrepresenting him.

LOL, its not like he was stealing or anything.

The saying goes, dont do the crime if you cant do the time. The laws and penitude were in place before the offence so basically tough shit.

what I said didn't quite come out right, heh

I always thought these release groups are not much more than a hobby, I thought they all just do it for some online rep and shits and giggles, any financial gain is minimal... so you gotta be pretty damn retarded to get 5 years for a hobby like that, especially if you are 40 years old...

What charges did they NOT file!

You might want to get that list before you jump the gun.

Since the guy is using the internet the following charge is always a possibility :

Don't be fooled. Release groups make bank selling 0day FTP accounts etc.

Just because it is a Hobby will not wash with a judge, nor would the lack of revenue (although unlikely). Seemed a pretty serious, organised and concerted attempt. I can bet the prosecution just takes 50,000 downloads and multiplies that into lost DVD or cinema ticket sales and all of a sudden there is large values floating around.

Torrent seeding and fining the downloader is also becoming a huge growth business generating vast amounts of cash for the various partners.

I assume the lack of revenue was reflected in the relatively small fine.

5 years defiantly sends a warning....

"Revenue made" has nothing to do with whether or not piracy occurred.
Opening the vault and giving away the stash for free is still theft.
