Here in Oregon they are trying to add a tax on electric and hybrid cars. They are claiming that because these cars use less (or no) gas then the state is getting less tax revenue so they have to make it up somehow.

It is pretty pathetic.

Electrics and hybrids do use less fuel, so they pay less or no road tax. Highway maintainence is funded by fuel tax.

Anything that drives on the roads should pay.

To me is should be based on how much you drive, not how much gas you use. My brother drives 40 miles each way to work. He drives a truck and hauls tools and parts etc so he uses a hell of a lot more gas than someone driving the same distance in a commuter car. I don't think he should be forced to pay more taxes just because he drives a different type of car.

As long as its a fair road tax, and the tax goes to building new roads or repairing existing roads, and the amount they pay is exactly the same for other cars in the same weight class, that is totally fine.

Most republicans though are in the back pocket of big oil will try anything to squash any alternative to transportation that isn't oil based.

Stupidity is rampant in both parties. Rant about something else.
