Believe in God or not?

One of the boston threads kinda got me curious.

Jel 04-29-2013 04:34 PM

define 'god' for the context of this thread :)

if it's an intelligent being with the power of decision, hell no.

harvey 04-29-2013 04:36 PM

Of course I believe in me, I exist!

Also, I believe in my peers Thor, Ra, Jupiter (and Jupiter's cock), Zeus, Baal Moloch, Krishna and many more. I believe that sucker Jehovah may get his shit together some day, but for now he's a crazy motherfucker, too bloodthirsty and resentful :disgust

brassmonkey 04-29-2013 04:37 PM

doesn't really matter if i do or don't.

AllAboutCams 04-29-2013 04:40 PM

yes but not in the sense you think

mikesinner 04-29-2013 04:49 PM

Incredible ignorance is portrayed by as person who assumes something is real when there is absolutely no evidence that it is.

Jesus is not and never was a real person. He was probably morphed from the Caesar cult of that time. Ever wonder why they both have the same initials and died 10 days apart although it was 100 years apart it was only 10 days in the same month

The names in Greek are not that different and changing roman numeral I to a II is easy.

Julius Caesar, greatest man to ever live, conquered most of the world that really mattered at that time, brilliant politician and renowned author who wrote many books. (one has even survived to this day)

Jesus Christ, fictional character who never even wrote down his own name and didn't become known until 70 years after his supposed death.

you don't know that and to say you know even the slightest bit about how the universe began is in incredibly arrogant.

This is why religious people are becoming so hated in society. They take something that the most intelligent people in the world admit they know little or nothing about and claim they have the answer to it because they read a 5k year old book. How can you claim such a person is anything more than willfully ignorant.

It's fine to say I don't know. My argument is with people that say there is a god. No one knows for sure and most atheists do not say they are absolutely sure there is no god. Religious people are usually the ones saying they know for sure.

Ignorance and stubbornness usually go hand in hand.

so you're saying, for sure, that all religious people are ignorant and stupid?

Jel 04-29-2013 05:43 PM

btw, even though it's not for me in it's various interpretations of what 'god' is, there's fuck all wrong with religion, it's how people interpret it. blaming religion for all the shit idiots do is like blaming football for hooliganism. It's done 'in the name' of your religion/club, but has zero to do with what religion/your club actually is.

I'll go out on a limb here and confess that 'god' = energy, for me. Should be good for at least a reply or two :)

Jel 04-29-2013 05:44 PM

oh and to add, there's nothing so bad as a religious nut, as an anti-religious nut :winkwink:

i like to believe that God is a representation of humanity as a whole

So, as a species, we are an 'individual' and God is the representation of that individuals maturity

ie, god is 'forever' (or as long as we're around to keep track); god is in 'all of us' etc etc

basically ability comes down to belief. adn if you believe in 'everything that is possible'

everything becomes possible

The ones that take their religious books as historical and scientific fact, yes they are pretty stupid. The funny thing is the less a person takes their religious text seriously the more well educated they generally are. For instance most modern theistic scholars don't believe Adam and Eve were real people but you can find plenty of rednecks in the deep south of America that will tell you the garden of Eden was a real place and that Adam and Eve were the first two humans that god created. They believe in the rib theory.

Lets remember the newest religious text we have is the Qur'an which is about 1400 years old. Next is the bible, 2k to 5k. Unless you want to talk about Mormonism and other offshoots of Christian thinking which are generally crazier than early religions in their beliefs.

Energy is actually matter. All forms of energy are actually subatomic particles. Therefore everything is matter. There is no nonphysical world. I think the only place the nonphysical idea has to hide is in other dimensions and modern physics is starting to lean towards the idea that there aren't other dimensions.

The concept of energy being part of some sort of spiritual or god world has been hijacked by the new age religious movement. In fact a high school level physics text book will remove this idea from your mind.

yes, I don't like absolutists but I think you have to lean towards proof and evidence as you go through life.

who said I have the idea in my mind that energy (and yeah, but I couldn't be assed to get into everything fundamentally being matter) is some sort of spiritual or god world? And who mentioned other dimensions? :error

I'm an ardent atheist and find the belief in God to be completely absurd. It's like Santa Clause for adults. That being said, I do believe that Jesus actually existed, I just don't believe that he was the son of God. He was more than likely a delusional megalomaniac which is why many of his followers eventually deemed him crazy and abandoned him. I liken him to a David Koresh type figure.

I believe in a supreme energy force (Allah, God, whatever you want to call the force) that we are all branches of... and will return to. I believe in the power of the mind and it's ability to connect to and manipulate the force through various forms of interactions (religious worship).

I also will never claim to be a sane person, so...

You can't prove God exists and you can't prove he doesn't.

Agnosticism is the only thing that makes any sense.

There is very very little evidence for a historical Jesus and no evidence for a miraculous one.

Check out a great book called A Glorious Accident. You'd enjoy it. It's a long read but he goes into great detail trying to explain our existence and if we are an accident or not.

That said, how can a human possibly know anything about the grand scheme of things taking place within the universe? On a universal scale, we know nothing and are nothing. As far as the universe is concerned, we are no more or less significant than bacteria growing on a piss ant turd, and if we all died within the next 5 minutes, "the universe wouldn't even notice," to quote Dr. Manhattan.
