It features Bangkok, Bangladesh, and Mexico. Some of it was absolutely brutal, especially the Bangladeshi part, was tough to finish.

It has some horrible parts, some shocking bits, and a very weird religious undertone aswell.
It made me cringe, gasp, nearly cry, and some parts were so weird they made me laugh.

I watched it recently. I feel like there's a huge difference between sex workers and survival sex workers, which a lot of those girls were. Survival sex work is so sad.

I've fucked hoes in Bangkok (great fun) and Tijuana (very mechanical), but Bangladesh - a guy's gotta draw the line somewhere! Oh - didn't watch the film - If it was available on download, I would have rented it.

I know what you mean, but it had so many lowlights, (highlights would seem wrong) about the way things are in the world.

I understand sex workers to a point, I really couldn't put myself in their shoes.

This documentary, especially the Bangladeshi part was pretty disturbing.

There is a huge difference between people who enjoy it, and people who are almost forced to do it.

I like the way you're reviewing a general not giving a shit about someone else. It's not glorious as the title might suggest. It's a pretty disgusting documentary if you watch it.

Have you watched it? What wasn't shocking about it? If you already knew about this, then I can see where you're coming from. I've heard and read about this kind of thing going on, but never watched something that touches the subject so closely.

They all know what they are getting in to as soon as that door is closed they will offer any service for a extra fee. The one in Bangkok where they area all lined up is funny but the Indian one is not that shocking family's do that all the time and the fighting is a daily occurrence.

Wouldn't surprise me, it's sad, they were getting jealous over certain girls getting picked in that part aswell. Then you go to the Bangladesh part where the girls are clearly human traffic. The Mexico part was the bit that made me laugh once, the woman who decides to give her story and talk about her way of life after getting her tits out, it was just weird.

I really don't know! The way she was leg spread and the other one seemed about ready to go down on her, could suggest that they were. It wouldn't surprise me. They kissed etc. Could just very be close friends or formed a close bond.

I saw it, its no more opr less shocking than many of the things lots of people all over the world do to survive.

I'm a woman. And I am pro sex workers so long as it's humane and the woman's choice. I don't see how anyone could be in this industry and not support sex workers? I mean porn stars, nude models, cam girls, strippers... they're all a kind of sex worker as it is.

Anyway. I'm a woman. I support all sex workers. I have sex worker friends in every level of the industry from tasteful nude model to street level prostitute.

I think survival sex work (ie: forced, no other options, etc) is abhorrent. Forced sex work is fucking horrible. No-other-options sex work is really sad.

I'm sure it was real fun for them too.

A lot of jobs aren't fun for the workers. It's fun for the customers. That's why it's called work. You get paid for production, like flipping burgers or blowing customers. Some jobs are more fun than others. That's life, not always fair.

the big problem with sex work is how easy it is for women to be forced into it. any woman with a drug habit is a very easy target. hell, any submissive type is an easy target. the guy lure in them in with sweet talk and once they're in, it all changes and suddenly they're prisoners. sure they could just run away but they don't for whatever reason. every time a guy picks up a prostitute, be it off an online listing, escort website or the street you could be picking up an abused woman who doesn't want to be there and gets no money from it. and that is extremely hard to put an end to. if prostitution was 'legalized', these people would not go away. it would just give them more means to avoid the law and continue to do what they do.

Living in Asia I don't find it shocking at all. There are two types of sex workers, sex workers who do it by choice (most of them), and those who are tricked / forced into it. The latter is very sad, but this type of sex worker is exploited from government officials, to high ranking military officers, to high ranking police, to wealthy locals, and on down the line, as they all profit from it. Human slavery of any kind is horrible but there are millions of slaves (labor / sex) still today and no one cares about them. In some cases it is so deeply ingrained into their culture that it is just a simple part of life and they don't even see it as bad.

However, if you do find all of this shocking, do some research on where your clothes, furniture, and gadgets / electronics were made. A lot of it is made by slave labor or in places they treat the workers horribly, often putting them in unhealthy conditions.

In many cases they are promised non sexual jobs in another country (waitress, hotel, massage, maid). As soon as they are on the ground, their passports are taken from them and they are either put to work right away, or they are beaten and forced to take drugs to become addicts, then put out out work.

Believe it or not, human trafficking of women is even huge in 1st world nations like the USA and Japan. Blind eyes are turned everywhere.

Especially when its the family pushing.

oh i know. its going on in ottawa every day. there was even a case resently where 15-17 year old girls were pimping out 13-15 year old girls against their will. they used facebook to lure them in. then you have the same situation you described often with asian, eastern european women. i can't even imagine how bad it must be in third world countries.

here in canada certain groups want to legalize prostitution but will it result in more women being abused or less? they argue less. i'd say it would result in more.

That is the worst. I constantly here of girls here who are sold off by their family or tricked by them and end up working in a whore house.

There is a case going on right now where a Thai girl was tricked into working in South Korea, where her aunt sent her to work in a legit massage parlor. They took her passport and made her turn tricks instead. The girl was smart enough to get a hold of a phone, get on facebook, and track down a Thai policeman who eventually got shit together to rescue her.

Now back home her DAD and BROTHER say it is all a lie and she just wanted to come home. I have no doubt, as does everyone else here, she was sold off by her dad to her aunt for money, which he in turn used to either gamble with, pay off gambling debt, or by a new truck. Now they are protecting the aunt and throwing this girl under the bus. Typical shit.

It boggles the mind how this happens in developed nations. I think it shows what a dark underbelly all of our countries have and just how many people look the other way (palms greased) to let it happen. You're not moving girls in and out of countries (developed ones) without help from people in immigration or somewhere high up the food chain. Unless of course you're making them do illegal land crossings through Canada or Mexico, but too many of them have passports and are flown elsewhere.

Japan is actually the #1 country in the world for "transit" trafficking. Meaning girls are sent there first and then sent elsewhere after. It is an in-between country. The Japanese are monsters when it comes to trafficking women, still to this day. That doesn't happen without help from the right people with the right connections.

It boggles my mind also how these guys get into the heads of these woman and control them, seemingly, with ease. i heard of one case in canada where a guy would put a hot curling iron into the pussy of a girl who didn't make enough money in a night then send her out to work all burned. and she kept going back time and time again. what the hell is going on their brains to keep them going back? i don't really get it but i've never lived it either. eventually they might take off but do they turn the guy in? nope, just leave him out there to do it to someone else.

i'd imagine a good number of the girls from out of the country come here, like you say to work a job then it turns out to be something else. i don't know how easy it is or how it all works but if the guys bringing them in have a legit business as well so they can say shes coming here for x, how does immigration prove otherwise? there was a law passed not long ago that made it illegal to bring girls over here to work in strip joints. the idea was many of these women being brought in to strip are really being brought into for prostitution.

Here its all students visa's they fly in to Sydney then to other states to work or they come in legit and people/other student's at the uni try to recruit them. And once there in the network a lot of people are connected the work is endless. Also the ones that come here on whatever visa marry a client then still go out to work so they can stay and still send money home to there family.

Speaking of human traffic, there is also a similar themed documentary relating to the model industry in Japan, can't remember the name. Anybody watched that also?

Basically these model "agents" in Russia, hold huge castings, pick certain models and send them off to "work" for Japanese clients, most of the girls end up in debt. Some of these were family related, parents trying to give their child a better life etc.

Various ways to get one over on the girls. From getting them hooked on drugs, to intimidating them with threats of violence, to using actual violence, to kidnapping their child or someone in their family, and sometimes the girls just go to pay off a debt owed to the loan shark by her family.

Africans are POURING into parts of SE Asia right now and using the girls as drug mules. These guys will build relationships with them, sometimes marry them, and even lie to them making them think they are delivering make-up or coffee for them. The girls get caught and either spend life in prison or get executed, and the Africans move to the next girl. The fucked up thing is they always tip off customs to one of the girls so customs can look like they are doing their job, meanwhile several other girls go through undetected. Everyone wins but the caught mule. Customs officers are even in on it in some of these countries. It's disgusting.

Too true. I have a B.HSc in Addictions Counseling. Addiction is devastating and sex work is a fast way to make money for drugs.

Well.. This is not that simple. They're often abused, threatened, manipulated, brain washed, suffer from stockholm syndrome, etc. "just running away" is a very difficult thing and never ever that simple.

In the Bangkok part, the nature of it was just weird. The name itself of the establishment was quite funny, "fish tank"? Then there was the part where they showed 3 of the girls, going to a host bar to spend the money they made having sex to pay for the company of men.

The Bangladeshi part where the madams were pretty much buying the girls, and one of them (probably most, if not all) seemed to be getting abused. The way they were living with children and family in the brothels etc. Was just shocking.

Sounds like my kind of movie. I like movies that touch my emotions, so maybe I will look at it when I find some spare time. Not sure about documentaries though I guess every solid documentary teaches something about the world and life.

Those girls are there on their own free will and work a schedule like any other job. All of the commercialized prostitution in Thailand is that way. It's the tiny shacks and karaoke bars that generally only service Thai men that traffic girls (often underage) the most. It is no coincidence that is also where the bulk of the HIV is, along with the locals brothels along the trucker routes.

So these NGO groups test girls from these types of shit holes that have incredibly high HIV rates then release reports that say 50% of Thai prostitutes are HIV+, when in reality they only tested a small group of girls that almost always come from the high risk, usually trafficked, locals only places, which are often owned by a policemen, someone in military, or sometimes a local politician. It is also said that something like 96% - 98% of all the prostitution in Thailand is for Thai men only (these types of places), which will really fuck your mind up when you see how many prostitutes there are servicing foreigners.

A "fish tank" or "fish bowl" is where girls sit on the other side of the glass, all wear a number. It's like you are looking into a fish bowl, hence the name. The customers sit on the other side, just like you see in the video. They tell the papasan or mamasan what number they want, and up they go unless they get a drink first to chat a bit. You usually get an hour and a half, she baths you, services you, cleans up and does it all over again when she is picked again. Some of the places in Bangkok have incredibly hot girls, Thai Penthouse magazine models and such, and the service is top of the line. Of course you pay more for the best, but the eye candy and quality of service is worth it.

I think I understand what you mean in the first 2 paragraphs, but are you saying the Thai government use specific testing locations to try and skew the numbers as a deterrent or something? What about, the girls selling themselves for sex to go to host bars and buy companionship of men? That seemed really strange to me, haven't seen that in the "western" world myself.

By the name fish tank/bowl, I could tell why they called it that, but didn't think it was such a good idea for somewhere selling pussy, to be using the name fishtank :winkwink:. That is what I meant. You could also it call it a hockey rink the way it looked to be honest.

Ok I was just wondering if you watched it because you seemed to take my points differently to what I might have expected :). Yes it is, and I thought a large portion of it was related to forced/survival prostitution.

Anyway, I'm just glad people are watching things like this, especially within this business. When I first thought about doing this sort of thing, I thought it was all about the money and, to some extent it is, but emotions are powerful aswell.

what i mean by that is often times we think we know what's best for sex workers and we want to ~*rescue*~ them from it and get them clean and sober and blah blah.

and that's good... IF SHE WANTS THAT.

But what we (we, as in outreach groups, etc) should be doing is asking them what they want or need... not assuming. Maybe they just need some condoms and clean socks, you know? My university major was addictions counseling with a major focus on homeless and street populations, which always includes street level sex workers. And sure, many of them don't want to be doing it... but they're also not READY to get out, and trying to force or drag them from it doesn't fix anything at all. But lending a shoulder to cry on, giving some condoms, that's important.

Focusing on their needs and wants, not our ideas and high horses.
