what an evesdropper sees when you use unsecured wifi

As you'll see, it?s relatively easy to capture sensitive communication at the vast majority of public hotspots?locations like cafes, restaurants, airports, hotels, and other public places. You can snag emails, passwords, and unencrypted instant messages, and you can hijack unsecured logins to popular websites. Fortunately, ways exist to protect your online activity while you?re out-and-about with your laptop, tablet, and other Wi-Fi gadgets. I'll touch on those, too.

Even basic HTTPS isn't safe. NSA can capture the data now, then keep it safe for the day they happen to come across the key. They only need that one key to decrypt traffic from EVERY user accessing a website.

Because you're traveling & need to go online?
Meeting a client somewhere public?
Want to get out of the home office for a spell to be in the presence of other humans?

Not sure how any of this is unusual.

BlackCrayon 07-03-2013 11:06 AM

that's what internet sticks are for or just teather your phone to your laptop. id never use public wifi.

klinton 07-03-2013 12:30 PM

thats why you should use VPN....10 $/month and you are safe :-PP

PhoneSexKing 07-03-2013 12:33 PM

The problem isn't just open WiFi.

For $20 you can buy hardware to snoop on cell phone data (and voice) connections.

The encryption in GSM/GPRS/3G/4G/LTE is A5/1 which was cracked in 1999.

So yeah.. if you use the cell tower data connection on your phone/tablet/computer and think that is safer than WiFi it's only about $20-in-the-hands-of-an-attacker safer. :winkwink:

Edit: Oh, and VPN only moves the spying/hijacking problem somewhere else.

hate when I open threads like this before going to bed, my current todo list for tomorrow looks like
- do a backup of fucking everything
- dig a hole in backyard, hide the backup
- get vpn
- get a paper shredder
- get one of those sniffer programs, go to an internet café, spy on people..

Make sure to have a good WPA wireless password on your home network too. Fairly easy to capture the WPA authentication key as someone logs in with airodump-ng. Then crack with aircrack-ng. Difficult to do if you have a good long passphrase.
