Got my first ever smartphone yesterday

After a post on this board, asking around and doing some reading I went with the Droid HTC DNA http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/droid-dna-by-htc/

It was only $50 through my cell provider and seemed like a good option.

I have only had it a day and half so I'm still learning how to use it, but I find myself wondering how I got by without it. Texting is so much easier, the sound quality of the phone itself is great and just the basic functions, never mind apps, is great.

Anyone suggest any apps you can't live without?

SilentKnight 07-18-2013 04:40 PM

Shazam - use it all the time.

MyDataManager
GoogleEarth

...and lately I'm hooked on Hill Climb Racing (simple things for simple minds :winkwink:)

scubadiver626 07-18-2013 04:47 PM

You got a badass phone, Grats. HTC roxxors!

SilentKnight 07-18-2013 04:55 PM

I never figured out why HTC didn't include an SD memory card slot or a removable battery in the DNA.

I was considerin' the HTC - but went with the Galaxy S4 after hearing about the memory and battery issue.

Spunky 07-18-2013 04:56 PM

I think I'll still keep my flip phone, I like to keep things simple and use it just for phone calls

Plus it's not as easy for the government to track you with the older phones. :thumbsup

id suggest finding the model and going through the 'tips and tricks' section

bit of a learning curve trying to figure out how you can further utilize the equipment to your advantage

example: flashlight.

The phone carries website says the phone is $599 without a contract. Looks like they go for around $300 on Ebay.

Texting is easier than with regular button phone? How come? I always text faster with abs, def regular keyboard phones than with touchscreen.

You must be an Apple guy and not have the ability to swype, which makes messaging MUCH faster...:winkwink:

Also Kane, a few apps not mentioned so far that I like is Rainy Days which is cool weather radar app. and Yelp for finding places and reviews. :pimp

O MARINA 07-19-2013 07:52 AM

Download Whatsapp messenger. Free international texts between all the different smart phones. Notification of message "read".

delapsoul66 07-19-2013 08:24 AM

don't have a smartphone, just make cash with mobile traffic :smokin

Kiwigirl 07-19-2013 08:40 AM

I was on Blackberry tour up until 3 weeks ago and am now karting around the iPhone 5.
Took a lot of adjustment but it's since grown on me.
Def suggest WhatsApp if you travel a lot. :)

yep great app, *but* the 2 ticks = delivered, not read :) Just a heads up in case anyone thinks their message has been read and ignored - all it means is that it was delivered - not that the person saw it :)

Sly 07-19-2013 08:45 AM

I know you are a music buff, I highly suggest Spotify. I have tried almost all of the music services, Spotify is the best.

Do you have an iPhone Jel?

dyna mo 07-19-2013 09:07 AM

kane, if you are interested in diving deeper into your device, here is the xda dev sub-forum for your device and an instructional thread on how to root your droid.
after rooting, you can install a file manager that can navigate your entire phone and also another app called titanium backup, which allows you to delete or *freeze* unwanted apps that slow down your device.

tons of tips and such on this sub-forum for accessories, everything.

My iPhone is jailbroken, there are all sorts of tweaks that shut crap like that off.

These little tags in WhatsApp and other chat apps are the first things I turned off.

I imagine that this is possible on Android devices too.

Why off? Isn't that the whole point so you know when someone saw your message? Or they see if you have read it? I love how some people reply on my iMessage and tell me my "read" notifications are "on".

Latest app I installed is Torque after buying an ODB-II bluetooth adapter.. Pretty fun

I have W8 smartphone and simple mobile phone with abc def keyboard. I can type pretty fast on the latter compared to touchscreen.

Video, photos, group chats, last seen online, can block user, can email history of chat. Can silence specific notifications, its pretty a good messenger.

Elli 07-19-2013 11:43 AM

Songza is awesome if you use it as a media player.

It is easier than my old phone which was just a regular flip phone so each number represented 3-4 letters. It was a pain in the ass to send any kind of text.

kane 07-19-2013 12:28 PM

thanks for the all the app suggestions. I got the Spotify and Pandora apps so far and love them. The phone has Beats audio so it sounds really good with headphones although I need newer, better headphones.

kinkstercash 07-19-2013 01:38 PM

Here are the apps I can not live without:

netflix
twitter
hootsuite
fitocracy (if you're into fitness or wanting to get fit this is an amazing app)
runkeeper (for tracking running, cycling, hiking or walking)
facebook
pandora
yelp
tripit (tracks all your travel details so you don't have to go searching for it while you're at the airport)
amazon

Welcome to the smart phone addict life! ;)
