We removed the Taliban and their government from power, and their replacement government has been in power since 2002 or so. Admittedly they are on shaky ground, but after ten years it's time for us to leave.

Odd, because I could have sworn the Taliban were removed from the government. President Hamid Karzai is running the country. The Taliban has been reduced from a functioning government to a terrorist force who stages bombings.

Keep in mind also that with Afghanistan and Pakistan, some areas of their country have never been controlled by the government... There is just no government forces, offices, or support for entire regions of these countries - and no law either.

I am guessing this is exactly what the Russians did too.

The problem is large amounts of Afghanistan aren't ruled by anyone - there is no government, no infrastructure, and no law. It doesn't really matter who is in power in the capital, because their power has never extended into the outer regions. Even when the Taliban was in power, they still didn't control the entire country - in fact, there was multiple armies facing the Taliban when they were in power.

I do not know. Oddly enough I don't know much about the Russian / Afghanistan war. I'm currently reading about the Falklands War, but my next book should be about the Russian war in Afghanistan.

Well, they were there for a shorter period, had nearly four times the KIA, and didn't seem to accomplish our goal. We accomplished our goal. Keep in mind our beef really wasn't with the Taliban; It was with Al Qaeda.
