Remote Control Helicopter Partially Decapitates Teen in Brooklyn Park

I know there a quite of few hobbyists on GFY and figured those of you would be interested in seeing this.

Poor guy, but also a freak accident... so hopefully people will not point to this as an excuse to regulate or outright ban them.

A 19-year-old Queens man died Thursday afternoon after the remote control helicopter he was flying cut off part of his head and shoulder.

Roman Pirozek, from the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens, was reportedly flying the helicopter with his father in Brooklyn's Calvert Vaux Park when he somehow lost control at about 3:30 pm. According the law enforcement officials, the helicopter crashed into the teenager and sliced off the top of his head and part of his shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pirozek was the vice-president of the Seaview Rotary Wings, a Brooklyn-based model helicopter flying club. He regularly traveled to fly remote control helicopters around the country, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"HE" was flying it. Chalk it up as tough shit. Operator error. An innocent bystander would have been different …..

Lots of moving parts, could have easily been a mechanical or electronic malfunction. This kid was not an amateur he was factory sponsored.

Too bad his father had to witness that... :Oh crap :(

As more and more people - good, bad, smart, and stupid, start getting more and more big RCs/Drones in the air, capable of caring dangerous payloads, regulations are sure to follow:

It's only a matter of time before they start using these as weapons...

Must have been a heavy duty piece of equipment. The $300 ones from staples would be lucky to take an eye out.

This reference is to obscure for most GFY'ers. Except me. Nice.

He was flying a Helicopter, not a drone. Here's a pic.

Drones, at least the Parrot AR Drones, are made out of very lightweight plastic. The props spin fast enough to shred plants (Sorry Tracy!) but aren't strong enough to cut your skin.

I stated that there will likely be more regulations to come regarding big RCs/Drones in reference to their ability to carry/deliver lethal payloads, not about whether their blades would be used as direct killing weapons (which would be pretty inefficient as a strategy, lol).

I guess I should have said large UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). :winkwink:

BTW, the photo I posted before the post naming Vic Morrow, was of Vic Morrow... :)

Wouldn't surprise me.

I was shocked to find actual footage of it on YT - from several different cam angles. One of those faces of death outtakes.
