Melbourne artist faces child pornography charges over seized works
 

Melbourne artist Paul Yore has been charged with producing and possessing child pornography in what is expected to become a landmark case.

Victoria Police seized several of his artworks from a St Kilda gallery in June but took until Friday to press charges. The case is expected to test the definition of child pornography, given the works are understood to include collages of children's faces on adult bodies.

''It doesn't actually have to be an image of child to constitute child pornography,'' said barrister Michael Stanton, vice-president of Liberty Victoria. ''It just has to be a representation of a child. In some jurisdictions, that's been held to include a cartoon.''

Mr Stanton said he was concerned that artists could be ensnared by the same laws that punished those who filmed the molestation of children, and that Yore could be placed on the sex offenders register if found guilty.

''I don't think anyone is suggesting Paul Yore is in any way predatory or a danger,'' he said. ''If you cast the net too wide - if you mix up artists and teenagers who consensually sext each other with people who are actually a threat to children - you lose the efficacy of the register.''

Geoff Newton, who will exhibit some of Yore's work at his Neon Parc gallery next week, said the artist would fight the charges.

Melbourne's art world reacted with shock to the news of the charges.

''I would like to know exactly who made the decision to arrest an art work and now prosecute an the artist,'' said Juan Davila, whose Stupid as a Painter was seized by the vice squad from the Sydney Biennale in 1982. ''Are they art experts? ? Yore's is an important art work that contributes to a debate on our society today.''

Unrelated subject but what ever happened to David Hamilton and Jock Sturges. Was a time when their works were coffee table photo albums.

When it comes to art, all bets are off. The idea of child porn being bad is that children were used to make it. If an artist creates it without that aspect, then let the sick fuck make his art.

I usually find it hard to believe art of nude children, of course most art I find hard to appreciate to some extent.

If a guy like incorporating childish things into anything explicit, it's a tell.

This artist is trying to push boundaries, now has his name out there, and got what he wanted.
