2 dead, 2 boys hurt in Nevada school shooting

The identities of the shooter and victims weren't immediately known. The suspect is "down," police said, and school officials say there is no further danger. The first reports of the shooting came in at about 7:15 a.m., about 15 minutes before the first classes were set to begin.

Students from the middle school and next door elementary school were evacuated to the nearby high school, and classes were canceled. At the evacuation center, parents walked with their arms around their children, some of whom were in tears.

"We came flying down here to get our kids," said Mike Fiorica, whose nephew attends the school. "... It's really chaotic. You can imagine how parents are feeling. You don't know if your kid's OK." The shooting happened on the school's campus, but outside the school building itself, according to police.

Spokeswoman Angela Rambo of Renown Regional Medical Center says two boys are in critical condition. Gov. Brian Sandoval issued a statement after hearing about the shooting. "I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning. My administration is receiving regular updates and the Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene," he said. Sandoval extended his thoughts and prayers to those affected.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, offered his condolences to students, parents and staff who experienced "a traumatic morning." "No words of condolence could possibly ease the pain, but I hope it is some small comfort that Nevada mourns with them. I stand by to be of any assistance if there is anything that can be done," Reid said in a statement.

The school, located in a working class neighborhood, enrolls about 700 students in 7th and 8th grades. The violence erupted nearly a year after a gunman horrified the nation by opening fire in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., leaving 26 dead. The Dec. 14 shooting reignited debate over how best to protect the nation's schools and whether armed teachers should be part of that equation.

Washoe County School District held a session in the spring in light of the Connecticut tragedy to educate parents on what safety measures the district takes. Sparks, a city of roughly 90,000 that sprung out of the railway industry, lies just east of Reno.

Someone should make murder illegal, and then we wont have anymore of these problems.

That's like saying "Cars don't kill people, people who drive cars do". In that case we don't need to stop selling cars, but instead we need to make sure that people who aren't mature enough or might be suicidal don't drive cars. It's more difficult to get a driver's license than it is to get a gun.

And what % of low-lifes in your area don't have a license? Same problem. You can get a gun illegally just as you can drive without a license, insurance ?.. illegally.

Watch an episode of cops none of those nitwits have a license, insurance, current registration. Just like the guns found on these same people.

True Story!!!

Barry-xlovecam 10-21-2013 12:36 PM

This is just the same story of a psycho kid with easy access to a firearm.

Since a minor cannot buy a firearm the responsibility is on the adult who could (as usual).

When I was a kid in middle school a fight after class on the school grounds was the normal way "psychos" settled disputes. No one got hurt that bad except for a few black eyes and bruised egos ... Of course, we were more primitive back then :1orglaugh

That gun was purchased by an adult, then probably stolen, then sold to you... See my point now?

So why does a 14-year-old need a 38 special? Don't answer that -- I grew up in Detroit ... And collected rents in South-Central and Compton ...

His father legally purchased the pistol? In the end of the story the pistol was purchased legally. So, that legal buyer was responsible.

Of course Sparks, Nevada is hardly the middle of the ghetto but gun ownership is widespread in that area. I have no problem with responsible gun ownership at all. However, like most these "psycho kid rage"cases to date -- this kid got hold of a firearm by other than legal means -- that is the problem in a nutshell.

Make it a felony (5 year) for the use of a firearm that you purchased in a crime and enforce it -- you will see some behavioral changes fast!

L-Pink 10-21-2013 01:51 PM

ALL Oxycodone is purchased legally. And yet it is a huge illegal narcotic problem. Why anyone expects guns to be magically different from other illegal products is beyond me.

The difference is when someone is caught driving without a DL or without insurance it isn't front page news; it's a fine. They aren't trying to kill someone with a car.

In very simple terms we need to find a way to ensure that kids and mentally ill people don't have firearms. In this case, a child walked into school and shot his teacher dead.

I want to be confused about this, but it's easy to understand why this happens. I figured it out in another thread when I was ranting about the NRA.

In the past, guns were used for hunting. They were never toys. Kids never touched firearms without their parents present. Now.... We all live in the suburbs, so few of us hunt, and we treat firearms like toys.

The parents of the children should be charged with murder this point.

The parents of the children should be charged with murder this point.

We also need to find a way alcoholics don't find liquor and drug addicts don't find narcotics. It's impossible in our society. Idiots and fuck-ups are a part of our society as are guns. The two will find each other despite all the good intentions and dreams of a utopian society.

And if the kid was illegally driving his parents car and killed someone would his parents be charged with murder as well?

Get over it, shit happens, and idiots do stupid things.

320,000,000 million people live in the US and every so often ONE of them does something stupid with a handgun. Wow, imagine that.

If it was one person, once, not so much of a problem. One person every few weeks is the reality.

Guilty of bad timing for wearing the shirt.

Barry-xlovecam 10-21-2013 04:37 PM

Odds are, maybe it will be revealed as fact, that this psycho shooter kid was not drunk or high on prescription meds -- hey look at the monkey BS is going nowhere.

I know there is no real 100% solution to this issue -- we can either try to mitigate these school shootings somehow, or risk having lawful gun rights threatened, restricted, or taken away because of repeated incidents like this. You tell me what is worse? Dead school kids or more restricted gun ownership?
