Question regarding domain value

I'll be the first to admit I don't know anything about domains.

I know shorter is better, .com is king and pronounceable is good.

Beyond that, nothing.

I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to try and lock down a 2 letter .tv domain, which is parked, listed as for sale with the old "make offer" thing, which I hate. I have no idea whether I can afford it or not.

What ballpark should my offer be in?

fitzmulti 11-17-2013 04:30 PM

Offhand, I'd say a LOT depends on the two letters. ;-)

Sly 11-17-2013 04:32 PM

go.tv would be worth a lot more money than wz.tv

With that in mind, your question is close to impossible to answer without more details.

agreed...whatever you start at usually sellers will say they expect double that and then settle for half of their doubled amount so bid high and act like you are going to walk....then let them offer a lower amount and the you offer half that but tell them "today only" ...it will be your soon enough my friend ;-)

^^^^^ exactly. :thumbsup

iSpyCams 11-17-2013 04:41 PM

ok well I don't know how to give more information without giving up the actual domain.

The 2 letters are not a word, nor are they an acronym that I can think of. They are common initials for a person's name. And, it's the same letter twice.

I think with the last 2 clues it's narrowed down to pretty much one or two possibilities.

So should my initial offer be in the hundreds, the thousands or tens of thousands? Either of the latter and I will have to re-evaluate and most likely say "fuck it" when I am not drinking lol.

Offer $200

Sly 11-17-2013 04:47 PM

jj.tv

Don't worry about what other people think is the right value for the domain. I am willing to pay more money for certain domains than any other person would be willing to pay, and I am totally fine with that because to me the domain is worth that amount of money. So ask yourself what is the domain worth to you? Is it worth $500? Is it worth $5000? Start your bidding at half of what you are willing to pay.

OneHungLo 11-17-2013 04:51 PM

Start off low but not too low as to waste the seller's time. Create an account over at namepros or dnforum and ask there. They are usually pretty helpful and will give you a good ballpark for .tv domain names.

ErectMedia 11-17-2013 04:52 PM

you want your offer to be serious enough not to be ignored but not at your top range as you can expect a counter offer so leave some room to move up :2 cents:

iSpyCams 11-17-2013 05:01 PM

I understand. I guess it's not so much a question of what the domain itself is worth, but more a question of how much I am willing to pay. That is not a decision I am comfortable making under the influence of alcohol so I will think about it tomorrow. For the time being I offered a hondo, which I fully expect will be ignored, but, at the same time I suspect if the domain had any real value it would not be parked.

You suspect wrong. There are probably more great domains parked then in use.

Owning a good domain doesn't mean you should develop it. You should only develop ones you have a passion/knowledge for. Good domain doesn't make a business. A good domain with the right guy behind it does. I own 505 .coms from 1998-2013. I have (38) fully developed sites between mainstream/adult. Most of the ones I have sold for x,xxx-xx,xxx were parked for many years as they were categorized to sell as I determined I wasn't the right guy to develop them. I have many domains worth xx,xxx parked right now. :2 cents:

Well, shit. I guess I will take solace from the fact that it's not a .com then.

Thanks. The actual situation is that I was recently contacted by some former band-mates that I played with when we were all in what would have been our college years if we had gone to college at the appropriate time. (I went a decade or so later)

We are all in varying stages of midlife crisis and want to get the band back together. The 2 letters of the domain plus the extension spell out our initials. In the meantime we have thought of other possible names to re-launch under. It's a pipe dream since 2 members are in NY, I am in Chicago and the drummer lives in Austin. All of us have careers and families. But it's a dream and we want to go for it while we are still alive.

I'd offer $800.

not too high, not too low to be an insult

I'm in Chicago as well, having my own mid-life crisis as well which includes decisions on career, possibly moving to Tampa next summer and either a Mustang or a Harley :1orglaugh

I have thought seriously about Florida, Mustangs and Harley's as well. The Harley is out, since I recently contacted an old flame who is raising 2 teenage daughters on her own as their dad was killed on a Harley while evading police in order to avoid a DUI. His kids dont have the real details as to how they lost their dad, it happened when they were smaller but they are only a google search away from the truth. I also have kids, love my scotch and hate the pigs and I would hate for those 3 things to ever combine into tragedy.

The Mustang seems like the smartest choice, I think as soon as my Infiniti is paid off that's what I will be wasting money on.

bdld 11-18-2013 02:16 AM

probably worth a couple hundred.

lock 11-18-2013 03:56 AM

It is worth between 1.5k and 30k based on sales in 2010-2013 on 2 letter dot TV domains.

Domains are a very retarded market. Branding is so much more important than silly words - what is this, 1998? No one types in bigboobs.com any more people!

I think it's just his way of saying "Fuck off" I don't think he really expects to get that amount or close to it, if he does well, there's still no way I'm dealing with a delusional person like that.
