I need to buy a laptop before years end...

Should I buy a Windows 7 or a Windows 8 machine and then download the start button?

AaronM 12-30-2013 09:41 AM

Just sayin.....

From what I have been reading, I can remove a lot of Windows 8 BS, like add a start button and that Windows 8 is a better OS.

Listed below are all the reasons you should get Windows 8 instead of 7:

No need to apologize to me. It's your loss. :winkwink:

FYI, I used to tell people the very same. My Wife wanted one so I bought it. Turned out to be more solid than any PC I've ever had so I bought myself one. Never been happier to be proven wrong.

FreeHugeMovies 12-30-2013 10:07 AM

I am reading more, Windows 8 doesn't even come with a VIDEO player. WTF. You have to BUY it.

Scott McD 12-30-2013 10:15 AM

Fucking hate Windows 8.

1 word. Avoid...

there are better (and free) options anyways but yeah, i was also surprised they took out the ability to play DVDs for example

but at this point i'd stick with 8.1 and Classic Shell

windows NT - good

windows 95 - bad

windows 2000 - good

windows ME - horrible

windows XP - good

windows Vista - bad

windows 7 - good

windows 8 - bad

see the pattern? win 7 for sure if you can find a laptop with that OS.
otherwise wait for win 9, hopefully it will have a start button

.

dezmondel 12-30-2013 10:22 AM

there is always the option to get a win 8 system and install win 7, just gotta make sure that the laptop you choose has win 7 drivers.

MediumPimpin 12-30-2013 10:27 AM

I use Windows 8 with Stardock for the start button, works just like Win 7 no issues it's fine, go get it.

madko 12-30-2013 10:29 AM

I used to be hardcore against Apple but I gotta say, they make the best laptops. Recently got a MacBook Pro with Retina display and now I can't look at anything else. Plus, with all the USEFUL software that you get for free, (iPhoto, iMovie, Numbers, Pages, Keynote) it really is a better value than any Windows equivalent. Plus for $80, you just install Windows if you want.

I am a MacBook Pro user, but if I were in your position, I'd look at an off-lease Windows 7 business unit from TigerDirect. You can avoid a lot of the nonsense/adware bullshit that comes preinstalled on most new systems. And between the 500-1000$ range you can get them with 8-16 GB RAM and SSD hard drives.

*Edit* - a lot of these systems will have warranties too.

As far as Windows 8 goes, I have heard too much (very lucid) negative feedback from experienced users. I don't like the idea of downloading a third-party program to modify the GUI either, that seems like it could pose for issues down the road.

FreeHugeMovies 12-30-2013 11:06 AM

Thanks for the responses. It's funny how you can get ppl to respond to issues they are passionate about. Meaning, ppl who hate Windows 8 are going to post in this thread bc. they REALLY hate Windows 8. =]

Windows 8.1 has a start bar feature added in now.

Win 7 for the win

mineistaken 12-30-2013 11:27 AM

Choose hardware, not version of windows... And if you found same hardware model with win7 and win8 then simply go with the cheaper one.

Your loss! MacBooks are fucking amazing.

Rumbledog 12-30-2013 06:29 PM

Mac book pro! .....I have both, windows 7 ultimate on a bad ass ASUS gaming laptop and the Mac is simply built much better.

As far as performance, the windows laptop is a little ahead of the curve. I like build quality so the Mac wins.

mineistaken 12-30-2013 06:42 PM

Op clearly stated that he is not apple brainwashing victim, yet sheep continue to offer that :)

pamon 12-30-2013 07:10 PM

Windows 8.1 has the start button back if that matters. Can boot to desktop as well vs tiles.

FreeHugeMovies 12-30-2013 09:40 PM

Ordered the Windows 7 laptop. Only will be used a few times a year. :)

I used a mac once because my friend needed help with his, very frustrating experience with no right clicking. Couldnt create a folder, couldnt organize his messy desktop, couldnt write email. awful. he hated his mac too. It took me an hour and a half to do something that would have taken me under 5 minutes on a windows machine.
I guess Mac is all "Gestures" to do things, but without right clicking I couldnt figure anything out

mac-win... slightly different flavors of the same shrimp-taco.
mac users will swear by Apple, and win users will swear by the rest, the only difference is the price tag... and the virus treat... win being more susceptible.
but judging by the level of expertise around here, most GFY members don't have much to worry about viruses.

if it's within your budget, go for a mac, at least they look good.
otherwise there is no difference, especially for a travel system.
