"Archival Disc" standard formulated for professional-use next-generation optical discs

Tokyo, Japan - March 10, 2014 - Sony Corporation ("Sony") and Panasonic Corporation ("Panasonic") today announced that they have formulated "Archival Disc", a new standard for professional-use, next-generation optical discs, with the objective of expanding the market for long-term digital data storage*.

Optical discs have excellent properties to protect themselves against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored. They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them robust media for long-term storage of content. Recognizing that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage going forward, particularly given the anticipated future growth in the archive market, Sony and Panasonic have been engaged in the joint development of a standard for professional-use next-generation optical discs.

Both Sony and Panasonic aim to launch systems with a recording capacity of 300 GB per disc from summer 2015, onwards. In addition, both companies plan to leverage their respective technologies to further expand the recording capacity per disc to 500 GB and 1 TB.

Holy shit. This is odd I thought things were moving to stuff like digital download only and shit. As long as one fucking disc doesn't cost as much as a 1TB drive...

The average person knows nothing about the technology and can only touch icons.

Because Discs have the benefit that the average slob will not have a idea how to rip the DVD and probably will not take the time to learn. And since 1TB will be a huge hassle to upload and subsequetely download.

For producers, this might be excellent good news.

If this catches on, I might consider looking into the possiblity of buying a system to convert film to digital.

Yeap, it was inevitable!!

Rochard 03-10-2014 06:54 AM

That hyperbole sent me on a 10 minute wild goose chase.
I guess that's just what happens when you forget to keep up with technology for a few months.

magicmike 03-10-2014 10:31 AM

Scott McD 03-10-2014 10:35 AM

My computer doesn't even come with a cd drive.

Theo 03-10-2014 11:49 AM

whats the point? everything is about cloud these days. Aside consumers, blu-ray never came a choice for professional storage either.

Just in time for the PS5

candyflip 03-10-2014 02:21 PM

I archive all my video on Bluray. $1 for 25gb isn't all that bad.

Choopa Phil 03-10-2014 02:27 PM

Ill be waiting for Blu-ray Mini Disc's

rockeru 03-10-2014 02:54 PM

By the time this goes out it will be even more useless as flash drives gain more and more storage space at cheap prices and they aren't one time writable.

Klen 03-10-2014 03:27 PM

While this wont be useful for average joe,for archive purposes this will be good-first medium consume less pyshical space compared to usb stick and hard drive.Second, some archives require to be non-rewritable to prevent alteration.

I'm paying $.04 per gig to archive on Bluray. As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat that.
