To Paysite Owners: How about VPN traffic?

What do you paysite owners do to capture sales from VPN traffic. The number of people who care about their privacy is rising rapidly and VPN usage by legitimate users is increasing exponentially. I see between 20% and 30% of VPN traffic on some of my sites.

In Europe governments and telecoms store connection data for up to 2 years and we all know about the NSA. It's just a matter of time until this data falls into the wrong hands.

So far most programs and billers flag VPN traffic for possible fraud, but it's costing you guys a fortune.

We normally get VPN traffic from middle east to access our paysite due to blockage by providers.

Yes we got some legitimate arabic customer, these do exist and would be a relevant % for arabic/india gf sites... however for generic sites, the probability that VPN sales is fraud it is like 98%. It is not just censored ISPs of Iran, it is also guys from countries you normally redirect such as Kazakhstan or Belarus, who learned the trick of VPN to see all the content like if they're USA guys, and some have access to stolen cards too just in case.

About westerns using VPN because of NSA spying paranoia, these are not many yet. Some time we get VPN guys buying in cam site, then we write an email: "Dear user X, you are using the proxy/VPN Y, is there any particular reason for it?"; legitimate paranoia westerns will reply in correct English something like: "That's not your business why I do that"; the Indonesian carders may not reply, or write something more odd.

How do you know when someone is using a vpn? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose?

No, the main purpose of vpn/proxy it's to hide where you are from i.e. who you are, and in fact detecting it is a vpn does not say who you are really. To have fake IP looking like a real IP, the reverse dns it should show an ISP, this is a little complicated to obtain and just bet carders do it.

You can detect proxy because the geotarget libs put vpn/tor on its own "countrycode". In fact in most advertising networks you can choice country OR "proxy". This is not perfect or updated. But you can check by hand the reverse DNS, if looks like server.com instead of isp.com you catch more. This is worth just for sales, but it is what the fraud/risk dept's of billers do, along with other tests I am not hereby disclosing.

It is one of many reasons to use VPN. There are many other legit reasons. One of them being the privacy of your connection and data. Telecoms are forced to maintain logs of all customer activity including websites visited and terms searched for. Then there are third parties who can intercept data. Both of them can forward and leak your data and so on. Properly configured and encrypted VPNs make your connection safer, just like putting up a fence around your house can. Nobody wants to be profiled.
