You can carry bricks of ammo in your backpack. Shotgun is overkill and a waste of time. You have to reload often, and you're wasting loads of firepower on something a small round to the head will take care of. Also, the shotgun takes more energy to fire and wears on you after a while.

I really do want a man cave compound on a mountain stocked with meat ammo weapons and a harem of columbian strippers that dont speak English.

Melee weapons are definitely key. Guns are awesome until you run out of ammo. You want something heavy and strong enough to cause crushing damage, with an edge for lacerating... Like a medium sized axe I guess.
