Dedicated servers: so it looks like Debian Squeeze will be aorund for a while after all

It was going to reach End of Life in a few months but it looks like they are going to try to make it an unofficial LTS with security patches.

Quote:

As announced in the "Bits from the Security Team" (LWN copy) email a couple of weeks ago, it is possible that Debian squeeze will have Long Term Support, primarily in the way of security updates.

The news have made it to Softpedia and reddit and even though it has not been announced how long it would be supported, what use cases are planned, etc., the answer I can give is that it depends solely on people contributing to it.

I'd like to add that no, the LTS announcement is not related to the use of Debian on the ISS laptops, as mentioned in reddit - at least not that we are aware of. And to avoid possible confusion from the Softpedia article, the plan is LTS for the squeeze release.

From the emails we have received in response to the announcement, I do wonder however where are the people who expressed interest and signs of engagement last time there was a discussion about providing LTS for Debian.

Perhaps it wasn't stressed enough in the email, but those who are interested in benefiting from (and therefore contributing to) long term support, please do contact the security team NOW.

After all, the clock keeps ticking and Debian squeeze is going to reach its End of Life in less than two months otherwise.

Yeah .... Debian on a dedicated?? Welcome to 2004 :Oh crap

---------

I am still amused at the requests I get for Ubuntu after a client has played with a LIVE CD on their desktop a bit ...

Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server are kinda two separate beasts ...

Just because you can open emails and pay MP3s on Ubuntu Desktop, does not mean you are ready to manage your own Ubuntu server! :Oh crap

What's wrong with Debian? I use it on some dedicated servers and so do a lot of companies...it's a great distro and some people prefer it over Centos.

I am not familiar with debian squeeze, but I have used debian and freebsd, redhat... Not familiar with centos and heard its a bit different from the others. I would like to stay away from windows servers, but feel it may be a safer option than centos, but as stated above about ubuntu... just cause i can use windows desktop does not mean I am ready to manage a windows server. Also, I like the 3rd party software ready for linux, that many are just not available to run on windows.

Key difference is in packaging system - cent os uses yum/rpm ,debian uses apt/deb .Other then that, didn't noticed much difference,so once you get familiar with packaging system you can use it as most of commands are same.

It matters to the people who use Debian and especially to those still with Debian Squeeze servers.

I don't like CentOS. The software often seems extremely outdated and in the past to get a server working for say a tube site I had to actually manually compile all the packages such as ffmpeg or I could never get all the necessary codecs working right. This was many years ago so maybe it's changed but I still haven't forgotten that shitty experience. I try to avoid CentOS and will not use it. Maybe that will change after a read a few very in depth reviews.

we use freebsd on all servers even more manual work then centos lol

Lol,sound like you never used custom repos like atomic and epel.Even if those two dont have what you need(and so far they always have updated version of everything)you could easily make your own repo with versions you want.

This was many years ago but as I recall there were various issues with getting all the needed codecs working along with versions which were compatible with other software needed such as ffmpeg-php (I think it was that then?). It was a huge mess and after a few days of searching I said fuck it and compiled the relevant programs such as ffmpeg from scratch. It worked but it made updates risky.

I'm not good with .rpm based distros though. I have far more experience with Gentoo, slackware, Arch, Debian, Linux Mint and Ubuntu.

Squeeze is a bit outdated. Tons of problems here installing certain packages to it, especially if you are using older Apache/PHP version. I had a lot of compatibility problems with current php scripts, so its "stability" is of less importance. My personal experience: Try to stay away of it.

Yes you are correct,i remember when ffmpeg was just starting it wasn't included in repos,i had to fuck around with compiling from scratch as well and it was royal pain in the ass.But second time when i needed ffmpeg yum install ffmpeg worked fine and there was no need for any further intervention. So even if some software is not currently available at the moment on repos it will come sooner or later. But i think atomic repo is quite fast with updates.

Yeah I would never suggest doing a new install with Debian Squeeze! Debian Wheezy is out and if you are going with Debian it would make sense to use it or even a developmental version maybe. But for those of us with older servers we could have it still. I have a Debian Squeeze box and it was a concern to me. See everything works and is stable for my uses but if it no longer gets security updates then it means I MUST upgrade it to Wheezy or do something else like get a new install or server, configure the new server, then upload a full backup. Distribution upgrades are kind of a crapshoot. Usually something little at least breaks or in some cases it will not even boot.
