I could really give fuck-all about either Obama or Romney, but Obama isn't really off base about this. Russia no longer a worldwide geopolitical superpower - they don't have the ability to project power & sustained military force beyond their immediate area, i.e. former Soviet states at their borders. They simply lack the infrastructure and bluewater navy necessary for this. And their economy is essentially a petro-state with all the short-term gain but long-term vulnerability that entails (whether they can transition from that remains to be seen).
Also at its heart, Crimea is very very very important to Russia, not really important at all to the West.
Let's give this current situation a few years to settle, see what happens in Russia internally after the surge of nationalistic happytimes fades, after billions of $$ are dumped in the corrupt black hole of Crimea, etc, before we start saying they're well on their way back to Empire and USA's "#1 geopolitical foe".
