"The "kill switch," a system for remotely disabling smartphones and wiping their data, will become standard in 2015, according to a pledge backed by most of the mobile world's major players.

Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft, along with the five biggest cellular carriers in the United States, are among those that have signed on to a voluntary program announced Tuesday by the industry's largest trade group.

All smartphones manufactured for sale in the United States after July 2015 must have the technology, according to the program from CTIA-The Wireless Association.

Advocates say the feature would deter thieves from taking mobile devices by rendering phones useless while allowing people to protect personal information if their phone is lost or stolen. Its proponents include law enforcement officials concerned about the rising problem of smartphone theft.

"We appreciate the commitment made by these companies to protect wireless users in the event their smartphones are lost or stolen," said Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA. "This flexibility provides consumers with access to the best features and apps that fit their unique needs while protecting their smartphones and the valuable information they contain."

When the government pushes for something like this so heavily you gotta know something is wrong. More than likely they want to be able to kill your phone if you were in a group area filming something they don't want filmed or taking pictures of something they don't want you too . Why do you think there's such a big push to have connectivity to even regular cameras? They don't care about your phone being stolen, they want to be able to have complete control of your phone if they need to without having to worry about carrier interferences. This is a Trojan horse being introduced to you as a care package. There's software that people can buy if they really want to get their phone back. You can also report it stolen to your carrier. Of course we know the gov has complete access to our phones, but it's a lot easier if you have local police departments empowered to do these small things. Either that or the police sincerely have a deep care about your phone being stolen. They care so much that they want it installed and you opted in whether you want to or not. Aww.. so sweet.

I am unsure your method of thinking is clouded by watching too many "Illuminati" videos on Youtube or you are halfway to the truth. However, I remember NYPD having a task force for stolen phones and iPads. ** See below link. **

Could that be a reason? People getting their phones stolen and resold on Craigslist or on the streets somewhere? Wouldn't this thwart dirtbags specializing in this trade?

exactly what I was thinking. The only motive for them to do anything is money & power.
