Canada by its friendly neighbor status sharing a border with the world's largest military power doesn't have to spend much on its own military, only 1.3% of GDP - it should be doing this and more.

Not sure why Ukraine had to wait so long.

?While it?s a bureaucratic step, in order to provide assurances to taxpayers that this money is being used wisely, there is obviously certain conditions we have to have met,? Rick Roth, director of communications for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, said.
God forbid they make sure the money is going to be spent on what it is intended for, and not on gold plating someone's AK47 or making jewel encrusted belt buckles.

It's cold here in Canada. And raining yet again.

But I saw Ariel Rebel tonight so we'll call it good.

Canada didn't help to be nice.

Our government knows that election time is not that far away and with almost 1 million descendant Ukrainians in Canada, our Prime Minister is seeking votes.

I am glad we are helping but it's not out of kindness.

that isn't a very cost effective way to get votes, not to mention about 80% of that is people who don't/can't vote...

don't see why qwe english is bad ...

But explain why it is not cost effective for a conservative gov to use public funds to promote their image ? Better then using their own funds.

As for Canadian of Ukranian origine, why 80% ( provide source ) don't/can't vote ???

Our conservative government doesn't care much about that. They want to win at any cost (like most politicians I will admit) and especially if it is public money.

Also, most Canadians of Ukrainian descent were born here and have family that have been here for generations so they are eligible voters.

"The comments mark a rare point of friction between Canada and Ukraine at a time when Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made censure of Russia and solidarity with Kiev a centrepiece of government policy, measures that play well with the more than one million Canadians of Ukrainian descent."

Backs up what I said earlier. But to hear this is even worse. It means we are now seen as a country who won't keep their word when someone is in trouble.

i wouldn't be surprised if this is somehow connected with the free trade agreement they're trying to set up in the Ukraine.

That article was from July. The article in August said the supplies were on a plane and being shipped. So the word was kept. It just took a while to complete the task.

Like I said before, I'd rather it take some time, than for it to be rushed and end up with half or more of the stuff go "missing".

_Richard_ 08-18-2014 10:49 AM

the july article was about promises made in March. I am glad they finally got around to fulfilling the promises made 5-6 months ago. and, another press conference to boot.

There are a lot of them. A ton live right here in my province of Manitoba.

Had me a Ukrainian girlfriend once. Blonde, gorgeous, very volatile temper though. But damn her mother could COOK. I miss that Ukrainian food of hers.

Agreed. I'd rather it take time too and be done right.

Still, the root reason for doing it is disappointing.
