Punctuation marks are not used just for sentences, they are used for delineation between words during reading and for verbal speech.

If you say the mistake in "THIS:" that implies that the mistake is to be found in what comes after "THIS:".... not before the word "THIS:"

So the answer can never be "the the" based on how the sentence and the logic is build up....

Children will catch it more than adults will, because the adult mind has learned to edit redundancies while reading. If you are well read, you can gloss over sentences and still get the meaning. Being in the 85% doesn't mean you are dumb. Just means you are well read and your brain didn't think it was necessary to slow you down and stop for the error, because the thought and meaning of the sentence is more important than the words.

funny thing is I checked the alphabet twice (after noticing the the) to find the error as I thought the mistake had to be after the :

I'd agree with struggle4bucks. Using a colon implies that we're supposed to be looking at the subsequent sentence. I did see the double "the", but I read the alphabet over and over, so it's kind of a dupe.
