Cuba helps in the fight against Ebola

Even Washington Post had to cover the Cuban reaction to the crisis with a glowing article entitled ?In the medical response to Ebola, Cuba is punching far above its weight.?

Cuba has sent 165 medical professionals who are now in Sierra Leone, and an additional 296 are to be dispatched to Liberia and Guinea.

Revolutionary Cuba can respond to that need because Cuba has prioritized building a universal health system outside of the profit system. And the solidarity with the peoples of the world is the underpinning of the hope of a world where people?s health is primary.

The problem is they are taking it home with them.
How many doctors and nurses etc are working in places like Sierra Leone and coming home and dying days later from ebola.
Countries should not send aid unless they are 1000% sure infection is not possible.

MaDalton 10-09-2014 02:53 PM

have you been to Cuba?

most doctors now have side businesses (they are allowed now) and sell stuff or drive taxi or whatever because their official pay is about $30 USD per month

if every doctor outside Cuba settles for the same income, we all can have cheap healthcare too (if like in Cuba medication gets subsidized as well)

Yes, I have been to Cuba.

As you worry about the people there I am sure you condemn the US illegal blockade and ecocomic sabotage against the country.

Yeah, that would make for a great news article. We have 'better healthcare' up here in canada but we still have to send out people to the US occasionally because of their superior facilities and specialists.

do you drink a lot or are you this slanted in real life?

blazin 10-12-2014 07:16 AM

LOL no...it is actually the other way around...people from the USA come to my country to get top notch medical treatment for a very reasonable price...

look our war torn shit hole, after 20 years of sanctions, still ranks better in health care, and so does cuba, than the USA...

you guys have i-health insurance its like i-phones...the advantage is imaginary :1orglaugh

always remember: 3rd world shit holes give better free health insurance than the USA does for $ :thumbsup

The casualties in health workers (volunteers too) is truly sad. But the inaction by the west is simply symptomatic of a capitalistic regimes. The west reacted to the beheading of a couple of westerners in Iraq with disproportionate investment in a new war and the munitions companies make greater profits. Western drug companies have not focused on Ebola vaccines because there is no profit in doing so protecting their already obscene profits. Western countries are beefing up their border protection to keep the poor-man's disease from breaching their shores protecting their health systems from potentially huge cost imposts.
If we can't lift above our vested interests to nip these outbreaks in the bud then what hope have we got when we have to address the disaster that will befall us when Nature decides it has had enough of us and our greed and surrenders to carbon pollution. Capitalism needs to be reformed back to a workable model on a global basis, we just have to care enough about or fellow man and less about our wallets.

Cuba often helps with things like this. They even offered to send doctors and search teams when Katrina hit New Orleans but of course the US govt turned them down. Same with Andrew when it hit south FL.

The US has some of the best health care in the world. The problem is not with the actual, healthcare but with the costs and the insurance system that has managed to take control of the system.

It does show the short sighted attitude of unequal developement, that desease in the end does not respect borders and even the wealthy can die of a desease that could have been stopped with a little humanity and aid. The fraction of the cost of the US wars.

The problem is, there is no economic gain for helping African countries. It's not a black vs white thing, it's a money thing. If there were money to be made, then you can bet your ass the west, China and even Russia would be assisting African countries with their woes.

The problem is Africa has shown it's self to always be a bottomless bucket. It doesn't matter how much money is pumped into the shit hole nations that make up Africa they always remain shit holes where there is no economic gains to be realized out side of supplying them with guns and ammunition.

Added to this there is "always" some issue in Africa which requires them to be bailed out.. Ie the bottomless bucket.

Meanwhile the middle east is also a shit hole, however the difference is the MI has oil and that oil makes it economically viable for the rest of the world to pump money into it and prop up the dictators to secure financial stability in order to do business there.

This is just the facts, like it or not but it's the reason the rest of the world has kind of ignored the Ebola problem. It's because the world has become conditioned to seeing these problems in Africa as a normal thing.

Your way over shooting the pay they get.

My mother in law got 19$ a month as a practicing Doc and now retired gets 16.5 per month. an Avacado costs almost a dollar so do the math.

But still some of the best doctors in the world today.

I don't get it.... Cuba sent a few hundred doctors to Africa. The US already has a few thousand doctors there, and now three thousand US troops to help out.

So the story here is.... Cuba was unable to do one tenth of what the US did?

US troops is no surprise ... they probably will stay for ever ...

As for few thousand US doctors, can you provide a link to back that up ?

Read CNN : http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/11/world/...html?hpt=hp_t1

no mention of US doctors :

Cuba was one of the first countries to send doctors to fight Ebola
