The Grid

From a team of dedicated individuals with strong backgrounds at big companies like Google, this new way of thinking about websites and their design could be a complete game changer, moving web technology and the cloud a leap forward beyond the current state of play.

Already finding success from a Crowd Funding campaign, people are now being invited to join what could revolutionise the way people create and share content on the web.

From TechCrunch on the 8th of October:

Quote:

Designing a good-looking website has never been easy, and while many services promise to let you build a site without ever having to touch any code, you quickly reach their limits if you want to have a more advanced site. The Grid, which is launching its crowdfunding campaign today, promises to do away with all of this. Instead of designing your site pixel by pixel yourself, The Grid team wants to use artificial intelligence to design your site based on your content and goals (more followers, more customers, higher sales, etc.).
I'm in and looking forward to Spring 2015 when it's due for general release.

It looks like a great idea and I think this is the way content generation and cloud will meet.

There have been some exciting new services being developed lately, one being Giant Swarm for micro services, the growth in popularity of DIY devices for the Internet of Things and easy to use cloud solutions like Digital Ocean.

To be able to take cloud based services and seamlessly mesh them with an application layer easy enough for anyone to use will be a game changer.

How much do you wanna bet that people will fuck up even the simplest process, AI or not? :1orglaugh

Well I pulled out of thegrid. I got sucked in and now I'm out.

After they pushed back the release and several indications that this whole thing would become a clusterfuck I demanded a refund. It took a threat to chargeback but they did refund me.

However others have not been so fortunate. The company is refusing to refund people even though they have pushed back their launch several times and there appears to be no improvement in the type of sites this thing creates.

Here's an opinion piece about thegrid.io:

Here's some examples of what this so called AI website design. They all fuck up badly when you resize your browser or view on mobile. They are so code heavy that some pages are 2MB in code size alone!

CirclesConference

Simply awful.

Concept sounds good...execution seems to be the roadblock.

It'd be great to just speak into a mic and tell your device, "This is what I want..." - and it does it. Although...I'd still prefer manual color-correction and post-editing of my photography - wouldn't trust that to an AI.
