Notorious former drug smuggler and author Howard Marks has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer.

The Oxford graduate, 69, from Bridgend, said he had "no regrets" about his life, despite spending seven years in jail after being convicted of serious drugs offences.

Marks, also known as Mr Nice, told the Observer newspaper he has bowel cancer.

The father of four has been connected with the Mafia, IRA, MI6 and CIA.

I read his book the guy did some big things. he was smuggling hash from Afghanistan when the soviets were there

I like the story of David McMillan - I hope they make a more recent movie about his life. He's the only one who escaped from Klong Prem Prison (Thailand) aka the Bangkok Hilton.

McMillan is quite a character.... they a move about him some years back in Australia but he's ripe for another one. He did quit the drug trade but apparently went back into it and is behind bars again. Well worth seeing this documentary about him (six parts):

He's almost 70 now so cancer isn't a huge surprise I guess. His book was an interesting read. I bet he'd be a fun guy to chat with at a party.
