Why do so many keep living where the weather is so shitty almost year round?

Hi all,

Almost every day of the year, I see major weather effecting so many here in the US. It is always up North and mostly in the northeast. It's insane what you all endure to live in these places. It is hard for me to understand because except for 4 years that I spent going to college in Boston, I have lived only in Florida and California. Here in SoCal, we have beautiful almost every day of the year. Yes we are in a drought but the weather is almost always amazing.

My questions is why? Why do you live there? Not being able to leave because of financial reason or because all of your family tree is there is one thing. However, it's not like those cities or suburbs are so unique that you can't find beautiy in a warmer weather region. Why stay in laces like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Philly that are not only shitty cities for the most part but have unbelievably terrible weather too.

I made myself a promise a long time ago that I would never live in a place without palm trees or that you would not want to vacation twice.... It's worked out very well so far.

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, I'm just really curious as to why?

Discuss!

Thanks, Mitch

There's your answer.

Money, job opportunities, demand, economy.

Edit: and I just wasted my 18,000th post on this.

oppoten 02-13-2015 11:57 PM

I'm in the UK and I'm starting to wonder that myself.

We had 2 weeks of warm weather last year.

MakeMeGrrrrowl 02-14-2015 12:00 AM

It's actually been a ridiculously mild winter here in NJ. Barely any snow so far. A few dustings nothing more. Spring will be here before we know it.

I live here now because I am bound by custody agreement, figuring out if I will stay once I am not longer forced will be interesting. I'd like to go someplace a little warmer.

I only need Spring, Summer and DEFINITELY fall. Winter can go away with global warming.

Alice22 02-14-2015 12:17 AM

I am totally agree with you, but some people love the cold and the winter :)

Spunky 02-14-2015 12:24 AM

I prefer the rain compared to the snow here in Vancouver

sandman! 02-14-2015 01:14 AM

reason i wont be leaving Chicago anytime soon is family :2 cents::2 cents:

there is a ton of shit to do around here tho just winter sucks :)

CurrentlySober 02-14-2015 01:23 AM

i cunt a4d 2 move... :(

RandyRandy 02-14-2015 02:41 AM

I moved to Kuala Lumpur for a business opportunity, not the weather. But after one year of living in a city that never goes below 70F, I can say it would have to be a hell of an opportunity to get me to move back to anyplace that has any type of winter.

AllAboutCams 02-14-2015 02:54 AM

I hate the heat i would much prefer it to rain all year or at lease snow for a month or 2

greg80 02-14-2015 03:11 AM

I live in the best climate in the world, south of island of Gran Canaria. Wear shorts and flip flops every day of the year :)

aka123 02-14-2015 03:55 AM

Why not? It is my "shitty weather" ecological niche. :)

"Pussies" live more south, so here is much more room to live.

Inertia caused by family and friends.

Freedom6995 02-14-2015 04:51 AM

If I lived south of the 49th, I could see your point, but seeing as I live on a rock off the east cost of Canada, that's not an option; however, I did spend 3 winters racing horses in Fla., and I can see your point there.

While we may have some of the harshest weather on the planet come winter (150k winds and 25 cm of white stuff in the works), but no property taxes, no locking of the front door, leaving your keys in the ignition while you do your thing at the general store are things I'll miss when I do decide to leave what they call God's land.

I live in Toronto and love it. Sure the winters can be shitty but the spring, summer And fall are great. Also, it's not just about the weather Toronto is a world class city with amazing restaurants, nightlife, arts and culture etc. for a city the size of TO it is also extremely safe.

ruff 02-14-2015 06:08 AM

I used to live up north, but now I'm used to nice weather. Unfortunately all the crazy people like nice weather too. So it's a trade off, nice warm sunny days, but you have to dodge a bullet now and then.

arock10 02-14-2015 06:47 AM

I'd say most people live there cause its where they grew up

L-Pink 02-14-2015 06:49 AM

Want to know what's really fucked? I live in Florida and the beautiful horse farm portion of central Kentucky. Because of some money making opportunities I've got the rotation wrong the last few years. I've spent summers in hot humid Florida and right now I'm in Kentucky and it's 13 degrees outside.

Manfap 02-14-2015 07:06 AM

I lived in constant sun for 8 years, and moved back to proper weather.
All year round sun gets boring.

ITraffic 02-14-2015 07:10 AM

because every winter i say fuck this shit and vow to move then summer comes and i forget all about it.

We have family here.
Both the wife and I have good employment with benefits.
Sometimes the snow and ice makes for good scenic photos (ok, weak reason...but valid, lol).
In the summer months, Niagara Region is a gorgeous place.

Plus it's fun to watch an influx of 2 million tourists acting like idiots.

Harsh winters make our summer that much more enjoyable. Sure, I wouldn't mind spending more time in a palm tree locale - but having the exact same weather day in and day out would get monotonous after awhile I'd think.

MaDalton 02-14-2015 07:16 AM

Because nice weather alone doesn't make you happy

BlackCrayon 02-14-2015 07:45 AM

i like seasons. there are a lot of fun things to do in the winter that you can't do without ice and snow. sure, its sucks sometimes but i can't really imagine living somewhere where the weather never really changes.

dyna mo 02-14-2015 07:55 AM

why do people live in California? it's a desert that requires trillions of gallons of water to be piped in and is in the middle of an epic drought with potential for earthquakes and more.

This more than anything.. FL has very limited "good" jobs as almost everything is shitty service industry and low paying (a right to work state). This means either you become an engineer to work for a govt contractor @ NASA or one of the tech firms (which always layoff when budget cuts happen) or you have to run your own business.

Meanwhile in New England even a recent high scool graduate can be making $15 to 18 bucks an hour after a couple of years, with on the job training doing production work or something similar. In FL that same HS grad will be making $9 or $10 working for McDonnalds or Walmart.

I've been in breeding facilities before, the whole thing is pretty industrial.

Get a place in FL for a few months in the winter.

For me 3 moderate houses in places I love are far better than 1 huge house I will not be happy with 3 - 4 months of the year.

Having friends spread out is not so bad since many of us snow bird and summer in the same places.

I think the weather around TPA has sucked this winter. It was nice a couple of days around NYE and then pretty much sucked.

You didn't miss much if you had better opportunities elsewhere.

I'm in DC right now and miserable because of the weather here, but the people are so much better.

I worked and lived in DC and surrounding areas for a number of years. (SW, DC and Springfield, Va) I would rate the weather as well as traffic as a good reason to move. DC is a much better place to visit than to live in.

i live in NY & personally enjoy having 4 seasons. you cant drive through LA & watch the palm trees change color in the fall.

hiking in the woods of new england during the fall color change? amazing.

winter is a lot of fun, despite the whining in the press. Its fun to do donuts in the snow with your car. fun to ATV abandoned roads during the snowstorms. fun to throw snowballs at friends. NYC is a blast in the holiday season, a total funfest.

& after a cold winter, spring has a awesome feel to it, when it feels hot at 50 degrees. how does a californian appreciate spring break, when the weather never changed.

dont listen to the media types who hype up storms & only interview people who cry about the snow.

:)

After reading this, now I want to move to NY. I'm from Cali originally and to be honest I'm sick and tired of this place. Mostly Everyone dresses like a fucking bum here in LA and the lifestyle is just too boring. It's a perfect place for the ultimate stoner lol

ErectMedia 02-14-2015 09:45 AM

Never left Chicago. Ton of shit to do here just winter blows. Think you appreciate summer more when ya suffer through seasons. Last year was brutal here this year not so bad just one crazy Superbowl snow dump. I vacation in Florida every year as most of my family left here a long time ago for the Tampa/Bradenton area. I complain about cold here and my family complains about heat down there so same shit. My uncle actually bought 3 lots in the Knoxville, TN mountains and is building cabins so he could leave Florida in the summer. I could possibly move down there as well as I get older. Weather is nicer down there but it's definitely no Chicago, different lifestyle. Shit looks better cause you're on vacation but once ya move there same thing everywhere has it's advantages/disadvantages. :2 cents:

Ya a few years ago when real estate was extremely cheap I was thinking about it. Mind you it is still quite cheap to buy down in Florida I believe. Mind be something to think about :-)

Rochard 02-14-2015 10:06 AM

I don't understand these people either..... It was 75 degrees yesterday in NORTHERN California.

https://scontent-2.2914.fna.fbcdn.ne...3d&oe=558C77C1

I grew up in NJ as a kid on top of a huge mountain. We spent our summers chopping trees to provide firewood, fall raking leaves, winters shoveling snow, and during Spring we would unfuck the damage. What a massive waste of time.

One winter I discovered my entire morning was spent shoveling snow, and my great reward was a warm meal for lunch, and then I spent the rest of the afternoon shoveling again. The following day was more of the same - two days shoveling snow. Fuck that. I vowed to move to a place where it never snows and to never return to NJ. Decades later I couldn't be happier.

I've seen snow twice in the past thirty years - Once because I had to return home to NJ for a funeral and once I drove "up north" here in California just to sledding for the day. I'm fine with that.

I've wondered the same thing about people who live in oven climates. 110 degrees is not 'nice weather'.

That depends. 110° and humid? Fuck that shit.

110° in the dessert but dry as shit? Actually pretty pleasant. Maybe not 110°, but yeah, hot doesn't bother me so much as there isn't much humidity.

I really love the changing of the seasons. Every season has it's own beauty; feeling; things to do/that come with that season; etc... Would be weird for example to celebrate Christmas when it's Sunny outside.

Sunny warm weather the whole year around would just become very boring i think...

I also love my annual autumn depression :1orglaugh

It is my family and lifelong friends that keep me coming back. My parents are getting up there in age and I do not want to receive a terrible phone call and have the guilt of not having seen them for six months or more. I try to come back at least once every eight weeks. Were it not for my parents, my visits back north would more spread out and much shorter in duration.

I do love spring and fall in the mid-atlantic. Summer is hit or miss... can be just as brutal as winter on the opposite side.

There are many people that requires different seasons to be happy.

I am not one of those people, but I do understand them.

My dad loves seasons. He hates where I am and I hate where he is.

The answer is pretty simple: everyone values different things.

Some, family. Some, like the weather. Some, jobs. Some, lifelong friends. Some, opportunities. Some, school. The list goes on and on.

1) Not everyone is as lucky as us.
2) Hard to believe, but some people act like they like crappy weather (they like the lousy seasons as well as the good ones)
3) We don't have room for everyone here; please don't encourage them
