New Jersey woman found frozen to death near her home
(Reuters) - A New Jersey woman was found frozen to death in the snow near her home on Sunday morning, authorities said.
Olivia Benito, 66, had stopped by a neighbor's house for drinks after they left a benefit event at an Elks Club in Lakewood, New Jersey, Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor's office, said in a news release. The neighbor told police that Benito had some alcoholic beverages during the course of the evening, Della Fave said. She left the neighbor's townhouse at about midnight to walk to her home two doors away, he said. The neighbor said she discovered Benito face down in snow when she went out to clear her car of snow at about 7 a.m. on Sunday, Della Fave said. She was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel, he said. Police found no outward signs of trauma or foul play but the death remains under investigation, Della Fave said. The temperature at 7 a.m. on Sunday in the Lakewood area was 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. New Jersey woman found frozen to death near her home |

Sunday, February 15, 2015, 5:44 PM - A man found outside in Etobicoke (Toronto) without vital signs Sunday morning has died, police say.
Toronto Police Services Sgt. Deborah Sova told The Weather Network the man, in his late 20s, was discovered around 7 a.m. on Allenhurst Street. "A passerby this morning found him in his driveway beside his wheelchair, and called 911," she said, adding it was unclear what time he had arrived in that location. Emergency services rushed him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sova said an investigation was ongoing, but no criminal activity was suspected. Cold/bad weather and intoxication are a real bad combination. All it takes is one slip and you're down for good.

I never checked the thermometer earlier in the morning when I went out to clear the vehicles and snowblow the driveway. Even though I'm fairly aclimated to the temps by now, and layered up with clothes (including a down-filled jacket)...my damn fingers were frozen within the first ten minutes outside. It was around -32c (-25f). |
