Do you use Reddit for traffic?

I guess I'm late to the party. I never thought Reddit was good for niche traffic. I've been playing around with it lately and the results are very encouraging.

Anyone else use Reddit for traffic generation?

Do you hit certain influential people or do you just hope your content goes viral?

Do you cross seed with Twitter/FB/Stumbleupon or just seed Reddit directly?

How do you get ideas for ultra-targeted niche unposted topics?

PornDude 05-17-2015 02:00 PM

No, do you?

wehateporn 05-17-2015 02:06 PM

In the early days it worked well

You can use Reddit, and it can bring large amounts of traffic, if done correctly (in moderation, good quality submits, every day, lets say). Quality of traffic and what you can do with it, is another thing. Do you want to set up a tube or a Wordpress blog, get 1,000 people a day from Reddit, and make like $0.05 from ads per month, and $0 from affiliate sales? It can be used, but it needs to be making sense too. You want traffic, but you also want to make money with this, otherwise it is a waste of time.

I use it a lot, it is not just to create good traffic, but backlinks as well, besides the site gets syndicated by other sites then you get backlinks from those syndication efforts as well.

if i would focus on tgp exemple or review site i would def go for reddit and stumble ect. But if you go as video site i wouldnt due to bandwidth thats me, some would argue its still good.

This 1000 times. I mean, hey. If you can find something that works with freeloading traffic? Use it. But that's all it is. Those kids don't give a fuck about buying anything. It's great to circle jerk your traffic as long as you run the subreddit. Otherwise be prepared for the ban hammer. :2 cents:

ardvark 05-19-2015 01:39 PM

Never had muck luck with Reddit. Had a good volume of unique visits, but no conversions :Oh crap

dyna mo 05-19-2015 01:44 PM

if it's primarily porn pictures, do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and setup up an imgur with the exact same name as your subreddit and host all your pics there

RyuLion 05-19-2015 02:09 PM

Never......

geirlur 05-19-2015 02:13 PM

I post every now and then and some good hits come off it but it's easy to get banned if they sense you're spamming your own site..

I have 2 niche subs on 2 different reddit accounts, both revolve around the same niche just slightly different aspects. One I'm just a mod and the other I started, but both have a tad over 12k subscribers.

I sneak a little amazon sales out of both of them pretty regularly but the end goal is to use both subs to jump start a forum. I currently feed traffic from both to a blog which is on the domain I'll use for the forum.

I think that's likely the best use of reddit traffic, is helping grow other sites, but if you hand build tailored subs you can slip in some marketing as well.

The problem most face with Reddit and profiles and posts etc is they don't get that you have to ALSO like/promote other people's shit, and you need to do so maybe 40-70% of the time in order to keep ytour cred and have that 30% that IS "yours" mean something.

But as Harmon said, often it doesn't. So few want to play the Reddit game long-term but it CAN be done. You just need to re-shift your expectations and time frames.

Of course, even then it's a crap shoot. LOL

Here's a decent video on reddit traffic generation from LAS

MakeMeGrrrrowl 05-19-2015 06:51 PM

When it's worked correctly absolutely. It's free and we definitely get customers from it. I have had blog posts shoot up to 2000 views from normally like 100 with just one good post on reddit.

If you don't want to mess around with blog posts just advertise on there, it's SUPER CHEAP!

kazbalah 05-19-2015 10:29 PM

You can get tonnes of traffic on reddit, but its all crap. They have a real anti make money / anti ads community.

No one will buy memberships, and a good 50% + have adblock installed.

Good for feeder hits and increasing SE spots tho.

Socks 05-19-2015 11:27 PM

There is no money at Reddit.

I don't think it's all crap traffic, but I do agree if you go in thinking you're going to get high converting traffic you're going to be sorely disappointed.

And, I have to agree 100% about reddit traffic being fairly anti ads/money making off reddit. Especially the porn folk over there. But, there are subreddits that are very much into supporting new ventures and don't mind at all if someone starting up or advertising something new does so. They're pretty rare though and seem to be more exclusive hobby subreddits.

This is why you promote there your content network as well, you have your money site and traffic feeder sites, so in order to have diversity in your posts you promote the content of your feeder sites and you create quality backlinks, the content gets syndicated and you funel the traffic to your money sites.

This.. Reddit doesn't work well for traditional marketing. It's not a site you go dump some gallery links to and expect to make money. I have seen cam girls whom work it pretty well as well as girls selling panties (legality of that is shaky/risky though, at least in the US).

It is however pretty awesome kickstarter type traffic source for people with unique items. There was a guy a few months ago making miniature flower arrangements out of used bullets. He was getting so many sales off Reddit he was able to turn it into a full time business.

I saw another guy whom made a thin leather wallet and was the same sort of deal.. He got thousands of dollars worth of sales from Reddit. Then of course there is the site imgur.com, that image hosting site has it's roots starting from Reddit, the guy whom built it, built it as a image platform for Reddit users and obviously it's worked very well for him.

Marketing via direct sales is kinda hard though and you have to be careful not to burn yourself by over doing it.
