Sad but true. I can't even watch TV anymore other than the movie channels, HBO, etc.

That reminds me, I need to cancel my satellite TV service.

i always have to lol at the articles about how things used to be so good, like "back when America stood for something", well bull fucking shit. tv has always been stupid. America never stood for anything other than guns, tobacco and alcohol and technology has always upset the balance.

This is a big one for me. This whole "kids can't fail, it hurts their self-esteem" crap is going to make a lot of problems in the future.

The TV stuff as well, I used to love watching TLC and the History channel when I was younger.

TV is horrific now. If it wasn't for the sports channels I honestly think I could survive without a TV these days...

Which is the exact opposite of what most entertainment critics have to say. TV is in a golden age at the moment.

CDSmith 07-20-2015 09:55 AM

Getting a PVR with the extra-massive storage cap was the best tv-related decision I've made. Having the ability to cherrypick everything worth watching basically filters out all the crap out there that is spread across 100's of channels and tortures most people daily.

The then vs now grapics in this thread though... so true.

you are thinking tv series as opposed to network tv. That is a completely different sport...

yes and no. all of those shows are certainly have no intrinsic value and are representative of television but no that Americans stand for guns alchohol and tobacco. what i am saying is this country was built on guns alcohol and tobacco and anyone that tries to harken back to a time when America stood for something good or was better than it is now, isn't getting it right. television wasn't morally redeeming then (whenever then was). hillbillies in the backwoods on history channel is no worse than hillbillies in beverly hills on prime time.

You're right, I forgot The Beverly Hillbillies damn! I tried to be as thorough as possible.

Regarding Then & Now - I agree with Einstein and his belief that our four dimensional existence holds the illusion that there is a past, present & future, when there is not. Time is relative. I'm a firm believer in Eternalism, psychologically. Reading the paragraph of TV shows, your mind was taken back. SOURCES 1 2 3

One thing I don't miss is getting static shocked by the metal channel knob when I was a kid.

I only watch the series and movies I want on Netflix, Youtube, etc. I just can't watch TV. TV ads are soooo twentieth century.

You couldn't be more wrong. This is a new golden age of television.

When I was growing up as a kid we had all of three channels to watch - four if you included PBS. You were lucky if you had two or three shows you liked watched. What did have thirty years ago when I was a teenager? Dukes of Fucking Hazard? Knight Rider? Miami Vice?

What did we have ten years ago that made TV great? House? Deadwood? Lost? My Name is Earl?

Now we have unlimited TV, and even better is the fact we have other companies such as Netflix producing TV shows. House of Cards and Game of Thrones comes to mind. Don't like those two? You have one hundred others across hundreds of other channels. Hawaii 5-0, Tyrant, Black List, Fallen Skies..... Like comedy - Modern Family and Big Bang are always good.

So much good TV right now!

Fuck HBO for canceling Deadwood.. They are fucking cocksuckers.

dyna mo 07-20-2015 01:42 PM

so according to rochard, television is better now because there is more of it.

2MuchMark 07-20-2015 03:06 PM

Television IS better now. There's lots of it as Rochard said, and you can time shift around to watch any show at any time. Image quality is far superior, as is sound quality. Everything has gone 100% Digital making any show from any ear, on demand. Old shows are presented digitally cleaned and with restored video and sound. You can watch any show on any device, any time.

And yes even the quality of the shows are better. Marvel's Agents of Shield anyone? How about Tru Blood? True detective? Big Bang Theory? Game of Thrones? The Simpsons (now in season 26th season or something), South Park (now in its 18th season). Sure you can argue that some shows have lost their punch, but don't forget that your opinion is relative and your tastes have change.

From a Canadian perspective, the quality of shows has also gone way up. You're lucky you never had to watch "The Littlest Hobo" on CTV because you only had 1 other choice (CBC) in Canada and their shows sucked even worse. I was watching a show called "Rookie Blue" the other day and it was pretty good. Good acting, great production values, etc. This was unheard of in Canadian TV 20 years ago.

Even MUCH (Which used to be called Much Music, which was an offshoot of MTV), is now mega huge.

Today's TV is fucking amazing.
