McDonald's franchisees say the brand is in a 'deep depression' and 'facing its final days'

McDonald's franchisees believe the brand is in a "deep depression" and could be facing its "final days," according to a new survey.

"We are in the throes of a deep depression, and nothing is changing," one franchisee wrote in response to the survey by Nomura analyst Mark Kalinowski. "Probably 30% of operators are insolvent."

Another wrote, "The CEO is sowing the seeds of our demise. We are a quick-serve fast-food restaurant, not a fast casual like Five Guys or Chipotle. The system may be facing its final days."

More than a dozen franchisees expressed frustration with McDonald's management, saying CEO Steve Easterbrook's turnaround plan ? which includes initiatives like all-day breakfast and a shift to digital ordering kiosks ? is a distraction from McDonald's core issues, like food quality and customer service.

Pizza Hut used to be one of my favorite of the chains, while Dominos was absolute garbage. About five years ago they switched roles. Dominos went back to making decent pizza. Pizza Hut went to creating 30 different foods, that have nothing to do with pizza, in a subpar fashion. The pizza is not good. If a company cannot create a good quality product that is right in its name, they have serious issues to work out.

All of these pizza places try making 20 different food items. Sandwiches, pastas, chicken wings, etc. I just want a decent pizza!

It looks like Dominos does all of that Sandwich garbage as well: https://www.dominos.com/en/pages/ord.../category/all/

I'll go to a sandwich shop for a sandwich. K, thanks.

ruff 10-16-2015 08:08 PM

They priced themselves out of business. Tough.

I can't wait to see them all close. I know its just a fantasy though.

MFCT 10-16-2015 11:15 PM

They're crumbling under the weight of management greed.

They typically get rid of their good, seasoned employees. But keep their new, lowest-paid, suck-at-their-jobs-and-dont-give-a-fuck employees. This saves them about 15 cents per hour, per employee. Doesn't sound like much, but it adds up day after day, month after month.

The money saved goes directly to management's bonus checks, who are already ridiculously overpaid compared to the employees. But you know, greed by definition can never satisfied.

So yeah, let them go belly-up. They did it to themselves. Would you like fries with that? :1orglaugh

Take your money to Wendys. Those are damn-good burgers, and they pay their employees.

I'm definitely not a regular there, but everytime I drive past one in my city (or any rather) it's busy as hell. They seem to be consistent with their products too.

Good on them, however as people are getting smarter (I hope this is it), they steer away from shitty food these days. I know there's more people under 30 in my life that have gone completely healthy and home made and rarely go out for food.

McD's has a huge inventory of, "Sorry about that," at the counter. Customer places their order...15yr old kid who doesn't want to be there and feels entitled to a much higher raise...invariably gets the order wrong while planning his weekend with the fry guy...then gives out a free "Sorry about that" after screwing up the order.

If you can collect three "Sorry about that" at the counter in one visit, you can trade them in by calling for the manager and upgrade to a premium "I'm very sorry about that".

nico-t 10-17-2015 04:56 AM

Well everything at mcd's tastes like cardboard, with high prices for the "food" you get.

The doner kebab place 50 meters from my house has fresh doner rolls & turkish pizza both for €2,50. Coincidentally the cheapest in town, but its the best i ever had and uncomparable to mcd's shit food.

Not quite that old, I started in the non military workforce in 1984 minimum wage was 3.35 an hour (equal to $7.50 in 2013, so I had a quarter an hour advantage over fed minimum) did that for 6 months and decided, fuck this, started working in custom metal fabrication for a little more than double the minimum wage, doubled again over the next 18 months, and received regular pay increases every 6 months after.

Point is I took the action necessary to put myself in a better position, I obtained a better and broader skill base, and my income has gone up consistently since. What I did not do is put zero effort into making myself better and whine that I should be paid more "just because"

I rather starve to death than to eat McGarbage. Their fries are the worst of all the fast food places, McNuggets taste like rubber, Big Mac might as well be called Small Mac not to mention their beef is tasteless. Fillet o Fish patty is smaller than my 14 year old nephews Palm, their kids meal toys look like a dollar store reject toy as far as quality, their smoothies has this gross slimey residue mixed with the actual smoothie which makes me crap diarrhea 20 mins after I drink it......or was it eating the whole meal that makes my insides want to expel it out as soon as possible, hence the diarrhea :)

Once I entered a mcd early in the day (11 am or 12 am) to get a big mac or something like that. Turned out they ONLY served breakfast sandwiches.
I, obviously, voted with my feet and bought a whopper at BK.

This has to come as a scary shock to many webmasters. They no longer have the option of flippin burgers. LOL

Personally never ate the burgers. Liked the apple pies and shake though.

As for pizzas, the only decent one was Chicago Deep Pan Pizza, or similar. Other than that I went to an Italian Restaurant with a brick oven heated by charcoal.

All these fast food chains suck on food and service.

The real value of that chart is to give incentive to improve your life, get a better job and earn a better wage.

Or you can stand around bitching about the graph and whine about your entitlement.

best description of the stuff i've had there (fries, nuggets & big mac.) Absolutely tasteless.

And to think that ive heard more than 1 person say that they 'love the fries there'. WTF. If you cut up a cardboard box in strips and fry it you get more taste than that shit.

CarlosTheGaucho 10-17-2015 11:25 AM

There's also the shift to eat actually a somewhat healthier, or at least fresh, made on the spot food, know what you eat etc. I can see new places with fresh, homemade burgers and snacks pop up every other week around the city, and no way would I ever trade that for McDonalds if I had a choice.

I'd expect they'll still continue to thrive in places like Eastern Europe though, where people are used to get massively underpaid and get terrible service, plus there's a whole new generation of obese kids who are kind of trapped into thinking that it's cool to eat there.

Could this be the beginning of the end for McDonald's? Franchisees say all-day breakfast is a disaster as company struggles to find its way | Daily Mail Online

mcdonalds does taste good when its fresh & im stoned. if either of those conditions are not met, no good.

:2 cents:

SBJ 10-17-2015 01:31 PM

but they also say customers love it and sales have increased. They just need to organize the staff to flip the pancakes when they flip the burgers..

I go to MCDs once a week when I go to the grocery store.. I did notice the drive thru was a little slower this week. We have 3 MCDs and if I pass them at noon or dinner time they are ALWAYS packed. None of the 3 in my town are going anywhere soon :2 cents:

What people from previous generations fail to understand is those quality blue collar jobs no longer exist. Sure it's possible to work 80 hours a week to better yourself but even the above average person is unlikely to do this

It's ok blame the individuals not the underlying problems, we can just keep kicking this can down the road until they rise up and murder us all.

Prices of MCD burgers in Eastern Europe are usually even higher than in US. And average wages of people are maybe 3 times lower than in US.
MCD is not a cheap eat there, if you can eat daily, you are considered well off.
And there is no culture of eating there daily, maybe once in a while.

Ok so when we have automated driving cars and automated fast food restaurants and automated everything else and 35%+ unemployment in the western world do you still plan on blaming them for having no job or a barely subsistence job? or maybe we sit down like adults and admit there are some quirks to the system that need to be addressed

You may not be directly responsible for their low wage but as a society we need to deal with it sooner or later

All day breakfast is actually one of the best ideas they've had in some time though, too bad Jack has been doing for 20 years.

Here in California McDonalds has to post a sign that their Food causes cancer. No shit:

I was in a McDonalds last night for a coffee on the way home. Place was packed...with people charging cell phones, chatting with friends and enjoying 100 yen drinks and fries.

McD's considered an untrustworthy company here. First rotten meat scandals and now they hide the main menu until you get to the counter in a strategy to make people buy the set meals.

The more the company tries the more they fail.
