I had a talk with a table full of people from other English speaking countries. My question was if the US is not number 1 then who is? Australia is well liked by its people. I did not buy their line of reasoning.

Even though we aren't #1 in many categories we are near the top in lots of stuff.

usa is #1 in many aspects but in all honesty, i'd rather move to canada, norway or new zealand

Why this is, is easy to explain. Jobs have gone East, migrants have poured in and some jobs are now done by machine. Carry on with this trend and many here won't have a lot of customers to sell anything to. Even those relying on the top 5% will find it harder. As more tap into a well, that's drying up.

Those in favour of the top getting richer will say we can't do without those people. When the truth is those people can't do without the West as a market to sell in. Until the old Third World replaces that market.

Imagine the wealth of Jobs, Gates, JC Penny, Walmart etc. If their goods couldn;t be sold in the US?

a good part of the greatness of the USA is a result of printed money (exporting inflation and enforcing the US$ as a "reserve currency" and petrodollaring the world etc) and exploitation of other countries by means of war or economic terrorism...what I like to call pissing in the pool...

I can not deny that the USA is a great country if you take away the pissing in the pool part...but the problem is, pissing in the pool makes the others move to areas with less piss...the more you piss in the pool the less areas there are without piss...

you can stop people from moving to unpissed areas of the pool by violence, but you can not stop the piss from moving in...at a certain point others will start to piss too...the strong will flap their hands and try to keep the piss away, but they will just increase fluid dynamics and speed up the piss mixing with the clean water...

then some politician will promise a special way to wave your hands to magically keep the piss away, in desperation, people will elect the false promise, and this will create even more vortices of piss...in the end it will be a giant piss fountain with piss flying all over the place like them giant water fountains in vegas, just with piss...

it's a feeling in your heart and soul, not your fucking wallet or a god damn graph.

the simple fact is, as the op points out, most Americans feel that America is great and most non-Americans feel the same way. they don't base their feelings of that on charts and dollar bills.

So your friends think ASSTRALIA is better than the US? Either they are jowelly Aussies themselves OR they have never been there. So FAIL (and get some new friends).

America is still great and the Leader economically, politically and militarily around the world. No one can dispute this. America is the lone Superpower and if America suddenly disappeared POOF who would fill that vacuum? Canada? Norway? Please. LOL

Australia, much to my shock, is the 2nd country in the World when it comes to quality of life (measure by HDI with all its shortcomings). So, they definitely did something right; with that said, I don't know a single person that has moved there or wants to move there, must be all that venomous snakes and all the other fucking weird creatures.

Ever seen the analyses that posit that the American military could not be defeated by the rest of the world put together? Russia, China, India, Germany, UK, Pakistan, Turkey and South Korea could "contain" the USA, but if their coalition frayed even a little, they'd be defeated.

I'm not sure I can think of a nation that had this much power that didn't use it to take over smaller countries. Almost any other group of people or system of government would have half the world under its yoke, paying tribute and slaves. Strangely, the US not only doesn't do that, it sits around getting dumped on by places like North Korea and the bedraggled forces of ISIS while writing check after check and rushing ineptly to everyone's aid like an autistic big brother.

I think what terrifies people about Trump (unreasonably because he could never get any of this done) is that he might notice that the world would perhaps write a strongly worded note, or issue a condemnation, but they would sit by with their thumbs in their asses while the USA took over or made war on any nation it wanted to. People are afraid that the USA will realize what it could do if it wanted to. It wouldn't be the USA any more, but there wouldn't be any North Koreas.

America is a fucking joke. NSA, White Merica, Dindus, Trump, Iraq, 911.. the list goes on.

America is still great. Just not so great for a lot of Americans. So what they feel in their heart and soul. Doesn't cloth, feed, and shelter them. Unless they live in Mum's basement.

I am pretty sure we considered Japan number one at that point. They were buying up everything in sight and showing us up at every turn.

It is being used by Trump as his tag line. That is why it came up. He wants to make America great again. I had sort of missed that we were not great now.

That shows that our poverty rate has been pretty steady for 40 years.
