They were protecting him and appeared to be succeeding in doing so. It may have been a cost issue as they were providing this at no cost to Krebs.

Problem there is that he was pretty vocal against cloudflare, so if he moved, it would bite his tongue.
Akamai probably hosted him in the first days because of good advertising, but after few years it became more then a burden so they dropped him. Cloudflare probably thinking the same.

I think it was more about scammers using cloudflare to hide their server IPs and such, not much of cloudflare's services. based on what I see on his twitter, many companies offered him "pro bono" services including cloudflare rep.
