SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio police officer has been fired after an internal investigation determined he tried to give a homeless man a sandwich with feces inside it.

Police Chief William McManus said in a statement Friday that former officer Matthew Luckhurst committed a "vile and disgusting act."

Luckhurst was a five-year member of the department when he told another officer in May that he had picked up feces, placed it on bread and put it in a container for the homeless man.

McManus says the second officer told Luckhurst to retrieve the container but it's not clear if he did. At least two officers reported Luckhurst's actions to supervisors.

Authorities have tried to find the man given the container but he's not been located.

Efforts to reach Luckhurst for comment were unsuccessful.

Is there some kind of test the government can give police recruits to make sure they're not hiring sociopaths? In an office job, there's ways of dealing with a sociopath...but when they have a gun and the law on their side it becomes a problem.

This would be a rather simplistic and redundant "test" simply because anyone who had the desire to become involved in law enforcement is by definition a sociopath at best and a full blown psychopath at worse.

There are NO exceptions.

He will end up working somewhere else as a cop. There was a story about how bad cops move from job to job as police officers

Yep.

Locally we had a female staff sargeant who operated the RIDE/DUI spot checks - she administered the roadside breathalyzer tests. After drinking all night at a downtown bar she hit a motorcyclist with her SUV on the way home. Her cop buddies drove her all around for 3 full hours to try and sober her up before giving her a breathalyzer. She still blew over twice the legal limit. They even sent witnesses at the accident scene home without taking their names and statements.

She was dropped in rank for a few months and given "administrative duties" at a desk. A few months later her staff sargeant rank was re-instated and she resumed her previous salary rate - despite having a felony DUI conviction on her record.

Just google - Cathy Edgecombe

There is, but it is a flawed system. You have to pass a psych eval in order to become a cop, however, there is no federal or even statewide guidelines for these tests. Let me give you an example. In my town, we have a cop who applied for a job with a different city. They agreed to hire him, but he had to go for a psych eval and he failed it for being too unstable so they didn't hire him. However, the police department in my town kept him on and didn't make him take another evaluation. Meanwhile, there was an officer who was hired by my city, but failed the psych eval because she had recently gotten divorced and they thought she was too distracted by that to be a cop.

So a recent divorce is a reason to disqualify you from the job, but being considered too unstable by another department's psychologist is just fine.

If Police Departments were sued for not selecting better officers, they would select better officers.
